Introduction
So now you know about squid, so what?
You have now learnt all about squid anatomy and some of the basic effects of anthropogenic activity on squid. However, squid is a very popular food and marine aquaculture (the harvesting of marine animals) contributes significantly to the economies of of both the Australian and New Zealand governments. How are we to balance the welfare of the marine ecosystems with the prosperity of our nation?

Task
Research and development of a P.O.V. (Point Of View)
You are required to conduct research and develop a personal viewpoint around this focus question:
Should there be greater restrictions on the harvesting of squid in Australia and New Zealand?
At the end of this unit you will be able to:
-understand and identify key issues associated with marine aquaculture.
-effectively use the internet to research the management of marine aquaculture.
-consider the impact of squid harvesting on the environment and the economy.
-post a blog expressing a point of view around the focus question.
-develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of the marine aquaculture in Australia and New Zealand.
-critically consider evidence when developing a view point on an issue.
Process
Lesson 1:
For the first lesson you must research a the following two webpages:
- http://squid.tepapa.govt.nz/anatomy/interactive (Museum of New Zealand, 2004)
- http://frdc.com.au/knowledge/stuff_for_kids/Pages/default.aspx (Fisheries Research & Development Corporation, 2014)
Questions you should consider include:
- How does the harvesting of squid affect the marine ecosystem? (consider pollution, overfishing, use of nets, foodwebs, etc.)
- How does the harvesting of squid affect the Australian economy? (consider fish sales, boat sales, jobs, etc)
Lesson 2:
In your pairs one person must assume the perspective of a squid and the other person must assume the role of a fisherman. Consider the research evidence you found yesterday and post a blog on our class wiki outlining your case in regards to the focus question. Be sure to reference your ideas!
Lesson 3:
By yourself, reply to at least one post from a 'squid' and one post fom a 'fisherman'. Think critically about their arguments and in your reply include one thing you liked and one thing you think they could improve. Alternatively, offer a counter-argument if you disagree with one of their points.
After you have replied, consider the question in depth. Write a final blog post outlining your personal position on the question and include the major isues. Make sure your P.O.V. is easy to follow, reference your ideas and use images to illustrate your arguments.

Evaluation
You will be assessed according to the following rubric.
|
|
Low (0-1) |
Middle (2-3) |
High (4-5) |
|
Understand and identify key issues associated with marine aquaculture. |
Outlines 1-2 issues around marine aquaculture. |
Outlines 3-4 relevant issues around marine aquaculture. |
Outlines a wide range (5 or more) key issues around marine aquaculture. |
|
Effectively use the internet to research the management of marine aquaculture. |
Uses limited or no references in blog. |
Cites pages where information was sourced for the development of ideas in the blog. |
Cites references in detail and comments on their credibility. |
|
Consider the impact of squid harvesting on the environment and the economy. |
Considers the focus question on a superficial level. |
Considers one side of the argument. |
Considers both sides of the issue in significant depth. |
|
Post blogs expressing a point of view around the focus question. |
Posts a brief blog or no blog at all. Very little detail included. |
Posts blogs expressing a simple but justified P.O.V. |
Posts blogs which clearly outline a well considered P.O.V. |
|
Develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of the marine aquaculture in Australia and New Zealand. |
Some issues are discussed briefly. Little depth of understanding is demonstrated. |
Issues are considered in some depth and the implications are discussed. |
Issues are examined in great depth and the complexity of the issue is discussed in detail. |
|
Dritically consider evidence when developing a view point on an issue. |
Does not use research evidence to back up their opinions. |
Uses research evidence in the development of some of their opinions. |
Create a point of view based on research evidence from a range of sources. |

Conclusion
Well done!
Hopefully now you can understand the complexity of issues around marine aquaculture. Policies are often influenced by issues that you have discussed in this webquest and those issues are often influenced by scientific evidence.
Who would have thought squid were so important!
