The Branches of Government

Introduction

Students will explore the three branches of government:legislative, judicial, and executive. Through readings, research, projects, and other engaging activities students will develop an understanding of the United States Government. 

Task

Student will collaborate in groups to create a presentation about one of the three branches of the United States Government. 

Process

1. Students will be assigned a reading either the legislative, judicial, or executive branch. They will use the jigsaw strategy to complete and discuss each reading. Writing down key words to share with their group and other groups.

2. Students will research their branch of government and find valuable articles, videos, pictures, etc. that can enhance their understanding and presentation of the branch of government that they are studying. 

3. Students will pick from a choice board how they will present their assigned branch of government to their classmates. They will collaborate and communicate to develop a thoughtful presentation. Each group member should be assigned a responsibility.

4. Students will present their branch of government to the class. They will also complete a participation survey descibing their group members participation in the project. 

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on the content of their presentation, group participation, oral presentation, and how well others understood the branch of governent based on their presentation.

Students will be given a rubric before they begin their webquest to understand the criteria. 

Conclusion

After the completion of this assignment, students will have an understanding of not only the branch of government that they were responsible for, but for all three branches. Students will engage in thoughtful discussions and analyze how each presentation helped them understand the United States Government.
