Areas of Plane Figures

Task

Discover information about the area of plane figures.

Apply the formulas for the areas of plane figures.

Solve problems involving the areas of plane figures.

Process

1. Create a list of simple figures and the formulas for their areas.  Type that into a Word document.  (You will eventually upload this document to Edmodo.)

2. Follow this link and work the 10 questions at the bottom of the site. You should read the sample problems before jumping into the 10 questions.  When you have finished the questions and you see your results, take a screen shot of the results  (Hit the Print Screen button - PrtScr).  It will seem that nothing will happen, but the computer has taken a picture of your results page.  Go to the Word document that you started (above) and paste the screen shot into the document by hitting Control V (CtrlV)

3. Next click on this link to find some compound area problems.  Work through the problems, and then take a screen shot of your results (follow the directions above for taking a screen shot) and paste that picture into your Word document.

4. Either by searching online or by reasoning on your own, come up with five (5) practical applications of area.  These need to be five DIFFERENT applications... don't say that you are putting carpetting in your living room, and then say you are putting carpetting in your bedroom.  That would be only one example.  Type this into the your Word document.

5. Follow this link to find out some information about the history of geometry. Read the information about the Babylonians, the Egyptians, and the Greeks. Summarize what you have found IN YOUR OWN WORDS. (two or three sentences on each).  Form a conclusion about what you have read: which culture contributed the most to geometry?  Why did you choose that culture? Type all of this into your Word document.

WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED WITH ALL OF THE FIVE ACTIVITIES LISTED ABOVE, UPLOAD YOUR WORD DOCUMENT INTO THE ASSIGNMENT SECTION OF EDMODO (WHERE YOU STARTED ALL OF THIS!)

Evaluation

This activity will count as a test grade.

There are FIVE (5) parts to the Word document that you will upload to Edmodo. Each part is worth 20 points.

Each section will be evaluated using the following criteria:

completeness (10 points)

accuracy (7 points)

general style (appearance, spelling, grammar, etc.) (3 points)
