Introduction
Your mission is to travel back through time to Gallipoli. You are to observe the events that happened at Gallipoli during the first world war and take careful notes of what you see, hear and feel. When you return home, to 2015, you will reflect on your new found knowledge about ANZAC day and why we commemorate it. Together with your team, discuss your experiences and observations, compare notes and report back, explaining the impact these events had on New Zealand, the ANZAC soldiers and their families.[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGxhb6NmQmc width:5 height:5 autoplay:1]
Task
YOUR TASK
You are about to go back to the year 1915.
To be successful on this task, read and take notes from a number of different resources contained in this webquest.
Think about the following questions and use graphic organisers to record the information.
- Where is Gallipoli?
- What happened at Gallipoli?
- How did these events affect New Zealand, the soldiers and their families?
- When, how and why do we commemorate ANZAC day?

Once you have finished your research, use Comic Life to create a graphic report to describe the main events and the effects of this war on individuals and New Zealand as a nation. you will be required to present this graphic report at a Senior Gathering.
Process

WEBQUEST 1:
Begin with a MINDAP to find out and record what you already know.
- You have 5 minutes to brainstorm everythingyou know about WW1. Use the mindmap provided.
- Record anything and everything you already know about WW1. It doesn't matter if you're unsure, or if it is right or wrong. Go!!!
Alternatively, complete the ANZAC quiz.
You will be parachuting into Turkey. It will help you make sense of the geography when you arrive if you have familiarised yourself with a map of the area.
- Go to this website and watch it carefully.
- Make a note of the main countries involved and then using the first map provided, carefully colour the countries in using different colours. This website might help you - click on the pins on the map for more information.
- Make a map key to show the names of each country.
- Answer the following questions - What is an Empire? Which countries were on the side of the Central Powers? Which countries were on the side of the ? Whose side was New Zealand on? Why were we on this side? Why was this called a WORLD war?

WEBQUEST 2
So that you know where in time you will be visiting, make a timeline of the main events between 1914 and 1918.
- Go to this website and read the information carefully.
- Read the 2 documents on your google drive: 'War Comes' and 'World War One Begins'.
- In your team, decide which events are THE MOST IMPORTANT for understanding the events that started WWI.
- Write very short notes (just to remind yourself) of what happened. Now close your laptop.
- Using only your notes, write the events (in your own words) that happened leading up to and after WWI on the timeline you've been given.

FILE DOCUMENT 3: Gallipoli
Here is a video clip to get you started thinking about Australians and New Zealanders going to Gallipoli.
- Go to your map of Europe and put Gallipoli on the map.
- Watch these video clips. Each one is about 11 minutes long. Focus on the big picture, not names and dates and other facts. Use a graphic organiser to take notes.
- Use the map of Gallipoli to record where events happened.
What Went Wrong?
