My New Zoo Animal

Introduction

Dear Students,

We would like to invite you to help us in a new project here at the Maryland Zoo. We would like to have a special animal exhibit featuring new and interesting animals!  YOU can help us out. We want to have a zoo fair featuring all of the animals that you have picked.  Your presentation will be placed on our school's website so people can learn more about the animals you have featured!

I hope you are excited to start and we cannot wait to see what animals you think should be in our brand new exhibit!

Watch the Video below from The Bronx Zoo in the state of New York.

Task

1. You will choose an animal to be featured in the city zoo.  Then you will collect as much information as you can to tell about this animal.

2. After you have collected all the facts on this animal, you will put it into a multimedia presentation for everyone to see. You will present your information to the class and head zookeeper so that a decision can be made as to whether your animal will be included in our new exhibit.

Process

1. Before you choose an animal, explore the websites below to learn as much as you can about many animals.

2. As soon as you pick your animal, let your teacher know because once the animal is chosen, no one else may pick it.  This way we can give the zoo as many options as possible!

** If you have trouble choosing an animal, decide on the kind of habitat you like best and then choose a classification of animal: mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird, insect, or fish.

3.  Gather as much information as you can about the animal you have chosen.

  • Size - weight - height

  • Animal Features - (a) For example, keen eyesight, wings, claws, blubber, fur, scales, and so on; (b) Why are the animal features special for your animal and how do they help the animal survive in the wild?

4.  Write down all the facts in your Animal Research organizer.

5. On your check off sheet, check off the website(s) you used to research your animal.
