Let's Move!

Introduction

Let's Move, was a campaign launched by First Lady, Michelle Obama to get children moving. For the next six weeks, we will be involved in different activities and healthy food choices. Physical activity is important to a healthy lifestyle and children between the ages of 6 to 17 need to be active 60 minutes a day! I will be handing out a pedometer to each of you to wear daily. It counts your daily active steps; you will be surprised how many you take a day. Girls goal number is 11,000 and boy's goal is 13,000. Each week we will also focus on healthy eating goals. We will be building a vegetable garden in the courtyard next to our classroom! In six weeks you will achieve your goals! (A Let's Move poster has been placed on the door to our classroom)

Task

In six weeks you will achieve your goals of healthy eating habits and become active 60 minutes per day!  Physically active children have stronger muscles, healthy hearts and lungs.  They are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, a childhood illness.  Jumping rope and running help your bones grow.  And best and not least it feels great to move, so Let's Get Moving!

Process
  • you will be assigned to a team of 4 students to make a list of different physical activities to reach your goals
  • these activities will be posted on the chalkboard
  • we will be using yoga as a form of exercise and watch a yoga video to begin the process   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtiQqMVoVjQ (Yoga Video)
  • we will pick three activities to spend 10 minutes on each, daily
  • the remaining 30 minutes of physical activity is each students responsibility
  • we will visit our local nursery, next Wednesday, to pick vegetables for our garden
  • we will plant our garden Thursday
  • throughout the next six weeks we will be completing worksheets on health eating and physical activities
  • your pedometers will track your progress

Conclusion

We did it!  We created our first WebQuest and it was fun!  You all realize the importance of health eating habits and getting active by moving!  Everyone made the pedometer goal and I am so proud of you all.  You are experts in yoga, growing a vegetable garden and best of all, you got moving!!

I am certain everyone had a blast and I have written some questions for you to think about in moving forward with continued health eating and physical activity to create a life long healthy heart, mind and body!!

  • what other activities would you be interested in learning? perhaps swimming, hiking, bicycling, roller skating, snow boarding for instance?
  • have you taught your family the yoga stretches you have learned?
  • have you and your family made any changes in your eating habits and daily movment?
  • are you happy with your outcomes and what you have learned on this WebQuest?
  • will you continue to use what you have learned as a lifelong tool to stay healthy?

WE DID IT! WE GOT MOVING AND CREATED A GREAT VEGGIE GARDEN!!  WOO HOO!!
