Exploring the Digestive and Respiratory Systems

Introduction

In class we have briefly discussed how the digestive and respiratory systems work. Now in this activity, you will further explore the specific functions and parts of many of the organs involved in these two systems. Hopefully, at the end of this activity, you will have a deeper understanding of what these organs do, and how they all work together to keep the systems of our body working properly to maintain homeostasis.

Digestive System: We have talked about the following labelled organs briefly, but today you will delve deeper and also learn about the liver, pancreas, and gall bladder.

Repiratory System: We have briefly talked about how the resiratory system works and the organs involved. Today you will learn more about how those organs and parts work and look deeper into the lings and diaphragm.

This will address MA State Science Frameworks for High School Life Sciences:

4.1 Explain generally how the digestive system (mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum) converts macromolecules from food into smaller molecules that can be used by cells for energy and for repair and growth.4.3 Explain how the respiratory system (nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, lungs, alveoli) provides exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.References:

Task

Your tasks are listed below:

  • Watch the two videos found at the following links:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s06XzaKqELk (Digestive System)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fxm85Fy4sQ (Respiratory System)

  • Follow the links on the next page to explore the digestive and respiratory systems. Feel free to take notes.
  • Answer the questions on the evaluation page in a Google Doc to show your understanding of the information and put it in your science folder so that it is shared with me.
  • Have fun exploring these systems and how your body works!

If you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask me!

Process
  1. Go to www.innerbody.com and expliore a little to learn how to navigate the site.
  2. Click on Digestive System and explore.
  3. Click on Head and Neck and answer the questions that correspond to that section in the Evaluation tab.
  4. Click on Systems and then Digestive System and then click on Upper Torso and answer the questions that correspond to that section in the Evaluation tab.
  5. Click on Systems and then Digestive Systems and then click on Lower Torso and answer the questions that correspond to that section in the Evaluation tab.
  6. Click on Systems and then Respiratory System and explore.
  7. Click on Head and Neck and answer the questions that correspond to that section in the Evaluation tab.
  8. Click on Systems and then Respiratory System and then click on Lungs and Chest and answer the questions that correspond to that section in the Evaluation tab.
  9. Click on Lungs and answer the questions that correspond to that section in the Evaluation tab.
  10. Make sure you thoroughly answered the questions and share your Google Doc with me!
Evaluation

Digestive System: Answer the Questions that follow in a Google Doc

  • Head and Neck
    • What is the parotid gland and where in the face is it located?
    • What are the three salivary glands called?
    • What is the function of the upper esophogeal sphincter and why do you think it is important?
    • Why do we have an epiglottis and is it part of the respiratory or digestive system? Why?
  • Upper Torso
    • Explain how the structure of the gall bladder relates to its function.
    • What is the function of the liver and what makes it a very unique organ?
    • Does the stomach help perform mechanical or chemical digestion or both? Explain.
  • Lower Torso
    • Where is the spleen located?
    • Explain the function of the intestines.
    • Explain the path that a bite of food travels and what happens to it from your mouth out of your body.

Respiratory System: Answer the Questions that follow in a Google Doc

  • Head and Neck
    • What is the common name for the traches?
    • What two parts of the respiratory system does the trachea connect?
    • What is the function of the larynx and how does it work?
    • Tell me about the different sinuses.
  • Lungs and Chest
    • What is the function of the diaphragm?
    • What does the diaphragm separate?
  • Lungs
    • What is the scientific name for the "tongue of the lung?"
    • What do the bronchi do?
    • What are alveoli and what do they do?
    • Explain the path that oxygen travels from your mouth to a muscle cell.
Conclusion

Now that you have an understanding of the digestive and respiratory systems, complete the following activity:

Find a partner and have your partner lay down on a large piece of paper in anatomical position and trace your partner. Have them do the same to you. On one drawing, draw on the digestive system, placing the correct organs in the correct places. Label the parts of the system and write a description for how they work.

On the other drawing, draw on the respiratory system being careful to put the parts of the system in the correct places. Label the parts of the system with a brief description of each part.
