Teacher Page

butterflyLearners This webquest was designed for first grade students. It could easily be adapted for younger or older students. For example, a kindergarten student could dictate a sentence about a butterfly picture while a second grader could write a story about one of the butterfly pictures. Teachers could simply choose to use some activities from this webquest as a whole group classroom activity.
butterflyPA State Standards This webquest addresses the following Pennsylvania State Standards in  Science/Technology and Language Arts:

Know that some organisms have similar external characteristics (e.g., anatomical characteristics appendages, type of covering, body segments).
3.8.4.C – Illustrate patterns that regularly occur and reoccur in nature. Identify observable patterns (e.g., growth patterns in plants, crystal shapes in minerals, climate, structural patterns in bird feathers). Use knowledge of natural patterns to predict next occurrences.

butterflyGeneral Information I chose to create this webquest as a complement to the story "I Am a Butterfly", found in our Harcourt reading series.
There are several ways your students can complete this webquest if you feel a webquest is too sophisticated for your students to complete independently:

  • partner up with an older student
  • work with a parent volunteer
  • follow step by step directions as a whole class in the computer lab
  • use an LCD projector for whole class viewing while the teacher navigates
  • allow students to complete the webquest at home
