An Analysis of the Properties of Triangles

Introduction

Triangles are fascinating shapes that relate to the world around us. All triangles have inherent properties that are common with others, but special types of triangles have their own neat details.

This webquest will guide and instruct the learning of the various facets of triangles. Some of the ideas will need to be purely memorized, but many of them are quite intuitive and will help with later mathematical subjects in high school and beyond!

Task

For this Webquest, the goal will be to learn and relate the properties of triangles with one another. That is, participants will be able to take two related properties of triangles and be able to explain coherently the direct relationship to them, preferably in a mathematical framework, but even an informal explanation is a fantastic start. Through this, you are surely able to understand triangles in much more depth and will help you be able to solve problems much more easily.

After a few problems and relations are completed, students will get into groups of three. A worksheet will be provided in the webquest to practice more memorization and relation explanations with partners. Make sure to practice adequately independently before engaging with the group for the best effect.

Process

Now that you have reviewed the section in the text, we need to make sure that you understand the material. I have provided three websites which you may review for assistance with your self study and review with group members.

1. Each group will consist of three students. The teacher will be providing a worksheet. As the worksheet is attempted, make sure to stop and communicate with your groupmates on the content of the sheet to make sure that everyone is understanding. The more participation that is implemented with each group, the more everyone will understand. 2. After everyone has completed the activity as a group, every individual student will take a test that the teacher will provide.  Both the group test and the individual test will be factored into the evaluation so do your best to understand everything and work together!1.) http://www.mathalino.com/reviewer/plane-geometry/properties-of-a-triang….) http://www.mathwarehouse.com/geometry/triangles/3.)https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/triangle-properties/triangle_…;

Evaluation

Every student will be graded on an individual and group basis. The rubric below details the conditions.

UNSATISFACTORY

COMPETENT

PROFICIENT

Group Work

Student is not engaged with other students in work, study, and review.

Student provides an adequate sense of participation.

Student actively engages with other group members in review, study, and work.

 Understanding

Student is not showing understanding of the subject material.

Student shows and explains basic relationships with material learned from previous lessons and new information from webquest activity.

Student shows an incredible amount of knowledge and can relate the various properties of triangles together in a coherent and meaningful way.

Effort

Student is not participating in activities as a whole.

Student occasionally becomes moderately distracted and does not focus on the work.

Student pays attention and does her best in understanding the material.

Conclusion

Now that you have been interacting with various properties of triangles, you will be more successful in your math classes, especially in Geometry!
