Introduction

Do you like to watch movies?  Do you like to read? Have you ever read a book before it was a movie?  Have you ever watched a movie based off of a book you've never read?  What differences can you notice?  What is missing?  What was added?  On this WedQuest we are going to explore individually selected books that were mad into movies and make comparions about them based on many different aspects.  When you have your novel and know it is also a movie, get it approved by your teacher and jump into the task section to get started!

Task

What is great about this project is that it doesn't matter which piece your engage first.  It is ok to watch the move and then read the book, or read the book and then watch the movie.  Considering that this activity is going to call for some reading, writing and the interaction with a movie, be sure to allow yourself about a whole unit worth of time for this activity, roughly 4 weeks.

Your task is going to be to take notes of the important parts of each piece and in the end compare and contrast them together with an essay.

Process

Activity 1

After finishing your first piece nake not of important characters and events.

Write out the plot, and make not of any sub plots taking place.

Keep track of the realtionships between characters.

Write down any questions you have as you watch or read your piece.

Activity 2

Repeat activity one with your second piece.

Activity 3

Create a venndiagram to compare the two pieces.

Do not focus on all of the similareties; since you experienced them in both pieces, they will be easier for you to recall.

Focus on amking detailed outlines of the differences between the movie and the book.

Activity 4

Once you feel you hae outlined all of the important comparisions between the book and the movie, you last job is to synthasize youot information in a compare and contrast essay.  Start with the indroduction about the general plot to these pieces, next mention the main similarities between the book and the movie, continue with the differences, end your essay with a conclusion about which piece you liked more.

Evaluation

The formative evalutaion of this activity will ultimately come from the compare and contrast essay you submit to your teacher.  The rubric below and the process list on the revious list, outlines what she/he will be grading you on.

Conclusion

From this activity, I hope you learn how authors of books and producers of movies may feel that different pieces of a story are more important to include than pthers.  I hope you also learn how to write a clear compare aand contrast essay.  Next time you read a book, see if there is a movie made of it.  Or next time you watch a movie, see if it was originally a book.  Either way, there are many discoveries you now know how to make on your own!! Most of all, have fun in all learning you do!!
