Frog & Toad Hunt

Introduction

Help Us Find Our New Exhibit Members!

The local zoo is renovating their Amphibian room! Some zoo keepers would like to add some new and exciting frogs and toads to their amphibian room. They have asked for your help! From reading, Frog and Toad are Friends, you know some things about frogs and toads don't you? Are you up for the challenge?  Are you ready to help make the amphibian room an awesome place?

Task

The zoo keepers want to find 5 new, rare species of frogs and toads. They need your expertise to identify what species of frog or toad it is and the basic information on the species. While researching the 5 species that are going to be added to the exhibit, record the characteristics of the species in your journal.  Details to record are going to be information on their exhibits, diets, habits, and concerns to name a few.

Process

Review the reading Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel. As you are reviewing the story, please answer the following questions in your journal as you review the story:

1) How are frogs and toads similar? http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/are-frogs-and-toads-the-same/

2) How are frogs and toads different? http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/are-frogs-and-toads-the-same/

3) How many speices of frogs are there? http://www.defenders.org/frogs/basic-facts

4) How many species of toads are there? http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/article/general-amphibian-facts

After reviewing the story, it is now time to research your 5 new species!

For each frog or toad you find, the zoo workers will need you to complete the following for your journal:

1. Write the name of the type of frog or toad you have found. http://www.californiaherps.com/allfrogs2.html

2. Take a picture (screen shot) of the frog or toad you found. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-xp/help/setup/take-a-screen-shot

3. Describe it's habitat in great detail, so the zoo workers can provide the appropriate living conditions for it at the zoo. Do they like cold or hot temperatures? Do they need water? What kind of plants do they like? http://frogsaregreen.org/tag/frog-and-toad-habitats/

4. Draw a picture of what a perfect home for this frog or toad would look like to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK4wMc8RFRQ

5. List what foods this frog or toad needs to stay healthy and living. http://www.kidzone.ws/lw/frogs/facts4.htm

Conclusion

Awesome job in helping the zoo keepers fill their new exhibit with some great frogs and toads! They could not have done it without you! While the frogs and toads you found are some of the rarest, there are still so many different amphibians out there that you can still learn about. Through completing this WebQuest I hope you learned some new and interesting information about frogs and toads.

Ask your teacher for more resources so you can learn everything you can!

Awesome job again!

Learning disabilities:

-Students with visual and/or hearing challenges should have the option to use a program that will translate or allow the student to hear audio for the webquest. Also, text will be enlarged for students who may have difficulty with their vision.

Advanced students:

-Students who are excelling through the WebQuest and would like to do the extended task may do so. The extended task would be to find another amphibian species, and compare and contrast it to the frogs and toads they have just researched. Students can create a chart or poster, write a paper, or really anything they feel comfortable doing.
