School Times Webquest

Introduction

You just got a job as a news reporter and your first assignment requires you to research various art movements. You will seek to understand how past movements including: Renaissance, Romanticism, and Modern art influences todays contemporary artists. Great news: You just found out that your article will be feature on the front page of School Times!  Your job is to create a digital front page of our newspaper: School Times. You must include images and compare and contrast at least 5 artists (including one local artist). 

Task

Great news: You have two weeks to conduct your research and to write your article!  Once your article is published (printed) you will present it to the class.

1. Conduct research, analyze and evaluate information about a Renaissance artists, Romanticism, Modern art and  contemporary artists. using the websites listed.
2. Conduct research, evaluate and present opinions about a contempoary artist’s piece of work referencing the descriptive terminology.
3. Create a digital front page of School Times newspaper: Reflect and Respond to the following question: How have  past art movements including: Renaissance, Romanticism, and Modern art influenced todays contemporary artists?
4. You must compare and contrast at least 5 artists (One of the five artists must be a local artist).

5. You must inlcude images of the 5 artists selected in the above task (additional images may be included as needed).

6. You must use at least 5 of the sources listed

7. Present your front page of School Times to the class or audience.

Process

You are so excited to begin your first assignment!

Now that you are ready it's time to get started.  Don't fret your not alone on your first assigment. Your have wonderful mentors (your teahcer and/or help from an adult) that will guide you along your way.

Great News: Your mentor (Teacher) has provided you with a worksheet of multiple websites to begin your research.

Step one: Visit at least 5 of the websites provided for you on the worksheet.

Step two: Find five artists (whose artwork you like). Remember you must select an artist from each of the following categories: Renaissance, Romanticism, Modern art, Contemporary, and a local artist?

(Hint: to help with the local artists see your worksheet your mentor (Teacher) provided you. Websites including The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center, Frist Center for Visual Arts,  and Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art).

Step three: Great reporters always take notes! Therefore, use your spiral notebook and take notes.

(Hint: You will want to take notes of the following:

1. Artist name

2. The birth/death date

3. Where they were born

4. The names of their famous artworks

5. What material these artworks were created with

6. The size of the piece of artwork

7. The category the artwork belongs to:nRenaissance, Romanticism, Modern art, Contemporary, or local artist.) 

8. Why you selected the artist

9. Why you selected these specific artworks they created

Step four: Every reporter has to check-in with their mentors! See the teacher and show off your great research (Your notes)! 

Step five:  Once your research (your notes) are approve, your ready to begin writing. Use the computer and type a rough draft of your article. 

       Remember the topic of your article is: How have  past art movements including: RenaissanceRomanticism, and Modern art influenced todays contemporary artists?

(Hint: to help with writing your article see your worksheet your mentor (Teacher) provided you. Websites including: The New York Times, The Tennessean, and The Leaf Chronicle  may help you when you begin writing).

Step six: Every reporter has to check-in with their mentors! See the teacher and show off your article!

Step seven: Once approved you are now ready to make your front page article. With the help of your mentor (your teacher/ or help from an adult) you will design your article in a newspaper fashion. Your mentor (your teacher) will provide you with a template.

Step eight: You are now ready to add images. Remember you must have 5 images, one from each category: Renaissance, Romanticism, Modern art, Contemporary, and a local artist.

Step nine: One last check with your mentor (your teacher) and together you will publish your article.

Step ten:  Excellent work reporter! You have just publish your first article. It is time to show it off. You will now present your article to the class!

It is imperative to understand how past artist influence todays artist. This webquest ask students to research and think about how artists techiques change over time. Overall, this webquest seeks to help students strenghten their research, writing, technology and presentation skills.  It does this in a fun an interactive way by allowing the student to play a reporter!
