Cells

Introduction

All cells contain a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nuclear material.

Plant cells are surrounded by a cellulose cell wall and contain chloroplasts.

Animal cells lack both a cell wall and chloroplasts.

Some of the major organelles in both animal and plant cells are: mitochondria, nucleus, ribosomesendoplasmic reticulumGolgi apparatusvacuoles, and cytoplasm

  • Each organelle carries out a specific function that aides in the growth and development of the cell.
  • Each organelle’s structure is related to its function within the cell.

We will address the following standards in this WebQuest:

GLE 0707.1.1 Make observations and describe the structure and function of organelles found in plant and animal cells.

SPI 0707.1.1 Identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles.

Task

Clear Target: Students will be able to identify and describe the functions of organelles found in plant and animal cells and differentiate between plant and animal cells based on organelles and cell processes.

Students will work together in pairs.

One student will be the researcher and one student will be responsible for recording the answers.

First decide who will take on each role.

Together you will design a poster to illustrate the different organelles and their functions of both plant and animal cells.

Process

Watch the video below and enjoy a lovely introduction to the intricacy of cells.

-Visit the website below and begin clicking on each organelle to read about where it is found and its function.

- Visit the website below and explore the different organelles within the plant and animal cells. Begin by clicking "Start the Animation."

Answer the questions from the quiz below. Print your quiz results to be turned in with your poster.

Use the following article as a guideline for designing your poster.

POSTER

Draw, color, and label the different organelles you would find in a plant cell.

Draw, color, and label the different organelles you would find in an animal cell.

Compile all the organelle names, functions, and where they are found into a table.

Your poster should have a fully colored and labeled plant cell, a fully labeled and colored animal cell, and the completed table that includes functions and where they are found.

Give the poster an appropriate title and write your names on the back.

-Include on your poster a Venn Diagram for plant versus animal cells. Together you will use the diagram to compare and contrast plant cells with animal cells by listing organelles present and any other similarities or differences that you know of like cell processes.

Evaluation

This is how your work will be evaluated.

Score
Content Missing information for many of the organelles. Current information given could be more in depth.  Missing information for some of the organelles. Give more detailed and in depth information on each organelle. The content is thorough, missing only some information about the organelles. Could go into further details about the functions of each. The content is very thorough. The details and functions of each organelle are clear and in depth.
Table There are many errors in the table or the table is not complete. Grammar, spelling, and accuracy could improve. The information in the table is accurate with little information missing but there are many errors in grammar and spelling.  There are minor grammatical and spelling errors in the table. Improve sentence structure and pay attention to spelling.  The table reflects no obvious errors. The information is accurate, spelling, and grammar are correct, and all information is presented.
Plant Cell Many of the plant cell organelles are missing or not labeled correctly. Include more organelles and check for accuracy using the website you visited. Few of the plant cell organelles are missing or not labeled correctly. Include more organelles and check for accuracy using the website you visited. All of the plant cell organelles are present but there are minor errors in labeling. Check your accuracy using the website you visited. All of the plant cell organelles are present and correctly labeled.
Animal Cell Many of the animal cell organelles are missing or not labeled correctly. Include more organelles and check for accuracy using the website you visited. Few of the animal cell organelles are missing or not labeled correctly. Include more organelles and check for accuracy using the website you visited. All of the animal cell organelles are present but there are minor errors in labeling. Check your accuracy using the website you visited. All of the animal cell organelles are present and correctly labeled.
Organization and
Neatness
The poster is not organized well, pictures are sloppy and rushed and lacking color. There are flaws in organization, pictures could use some cleaning up and a bit more color. The poster is organized well but still a little rushed. Use brighter colors to make organelles more obvious. The poster is well organized and extremely neat. The colors are bright and contrast well to make organelles obvious.
Venn Diagram The diagram is incomplete and/or inaccurately compares plant and animal cells. Include more examples and check for accuracy. The diagram could use a few more examples and there are minor errors in content accuracy.   The diagram accurately compares plant and animal cells but could use more examples. The diagram accurately compares plant cells with animal cells and has plenty of examples.
Conclusion

Congratulations on completing the Cells Webquest!

We now know the different organelles and their functions for both plant and animal cells. We can also differentiate between plant and animal cells based on organelles and processes.

After completing your mission, many of you may have questions about cells that we did not have time to explore during this journey.  I would encourage you to visit the following websites for further research on your own time.
