GETTING TO KNOW DIFFERENT PAINTING STYLES

Introduction

Over the centuries painting's styles have evolved and changed for many reasons, creating amazing pieces of work. There have been different periods and artistic movements through history such as Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Abstract, Renaissance, Romaticism, Modern Art... In this webquest we are going to focus on Impressionism, Cubism and Renaissance.

Task

You will create a fantastic painting as if you were one the famous artists you are going to investigate!

You will choose one these artistics movements for you creation:

  • Impressionism
  • Cubism
  • Renaissance

Process

Step 1: Understanding artistic movements.

Individually investigate some general quesions related to painting:

  • What is an artistic movement?
  • What are the main painting movements since the 14th century?
  • Which is your favourite one?

Step 2: Timelining painting movements.

Using the information you gathered in Step 1, you have to form groups of 3 to create a timeline with the main painting styles. Feel free to use technological tools like Power Point or Word, or do it with cardboard, crayons and anything you need.

 

Step 3: Investigating three painting movements.

Within the groups of 3, you need to investigate about Impressionism, Cubism and Renaissance. Find information about:

  • Historical periods
  • Main artists
  • Painting themes
  • Characteristic features: colours, light, shapes...
  • Reasons why these painting styles changed over the time

Each group will create a slide show compiling all of their information. The slide show should be no more than 12 slides.

Step 4: Creating your own piece of art.

Individually, choose one of the painting styles from Step 3 and create your own piece of art taking into account the characteristic features of each one. Feel free to use any material or tool you need.
