Introduction
It's Time For Some Football!
Fantasy Football That Is!
You will be using your math skills, real NFL players, player salary amounts, and football game statics to play a class version of fantasy football! This game will test your math skills to see if you have what it takes to make the leader board each week.
Task:
Your task is to answer this driving question: How can I use my knowledge of math skills to win fantasy football?
Process
Steps to Play Fantasy Football in the Classroom:
1. Learn the meaning of the number 100,000,000 through place value lessons.
2. Research your players, decide which NFL players you want on your team. Be mindful that you need current players that are actually playing.
3. Have a classroom draft party, each student will pick the players of their team. A player can be used more than once, this is the only time they will have to pick a team, so they need to choose wisely.
4. Make a copy of your player contract and start filling out the information with the player salaries using this list. They need to add all of the salaries together and make sure their team contract does not exceed $100,000,000.
5. Now it is time to use those math skills to see whose team is the best!
6. Using the weekly stats information (we started with week 1), students filled out their own weekly team stats chart. This is an easier document to refer to.
7. The students used that information to fill out their week one score card. The score cards had different equations based on the multiplication facts we were focusing on for that week. We started with multiplying by 2 and 3, then progessed depending on mastery. Here are week 2, 3, and 4 score cards.
8. Create a leaderboard for each week, the students on the leaderboard must have the correct final fantasy points using the correct math.
9. At the end of your unit, pick a winner. I chose my winner based on who was able to make the leaderboard the most throughout the unit.
10. Have Fun!
Guidance Questions:
- What NFL players will be the most successful so you can win the league?
- What math skills do you need in order to win?
- Do you know your multiplication facts?
Evaluation
Conclusion
You have learned how to play fantasy football using the skills you learned. You learned how to read a big number, how to add those numbers, how to use an equation to find an answer, to read higher level charts, how to multiply up to 4 digit numbers. To continue this you could make a new team every week, play with your family at home, have a playoff game or a superbowl, do this during the entire NFL season. Work on multiplication facts that may be difficult for you.

Meet the Teacher:
I am currently a student at Drury University in Springfield, Mo. I created this Webquest as a class assignment and to one day use in my own classroom. This fall I have been student teaching at school in the Springfield Public Schools District. This is an actual math unit that I planned and taught. It is a project based unit and my students had a blast doing it. I hope this is a helpful source and you and your class had as much fun as we did playing a classroom version of Fantasy Football.
