Food Pyramid

Introduction

This Webquest is about the Food Pyramid.

We will be examining the food pyramid so that you understand how to maintain a balanced diet. You will research the groups in the pyramid, as well as how much is needed in each. At the end of the lesson, you will be able to identify which foods correspond to each group.

Task

We will be identifying the amount of servings needed in each group. The amount of calories an individual needs varies. The amount of servings that are right for you depends on how many calories you need, which depends on your age, sex, size, and how active you are. We will also identify what counts as a serving and why each group is important. You will spend time exploring the web and finding which specific foods are in each level of the food pyramid.

This task will hopefully help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods. As well as, how much of each group is needed.

Activity

spend a couple days writing a food log of what you ate in the past week. After you have your data, I would like you to figure out if your current diet supports a balanced diet.

Process

The pyramid is an outline of what to eat everyday, and the amount of servings needed daily. The food pyramid is created to make eating healthy easier. The food pyramid has 5 major food groups. The tip of the Pyramid includes fats, oils, and sweets. The second level is broken up into two groups.  One of the groups includes Dairy Products that include Milk, Cheese, and Yogurt, and the other group includes protein, such as Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts Group.  The third level is broken up into two parts as well. These two groups are Vegtables and Fruits. The final level is Grains, which includes Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta. ACTIVITY

Evaluation

This is a set of multiple choice questions to access how well you learned about your food pyramid.

http://web.utk.edu/~fnh/new_page_6.htm#1.

After you you have completed these, please take the time to answer these questions.

1) What is a food pyramid?

2) How much of each group is required to be consumed on a daily basis?

3) What foods can be found in each group?

4) What exercise is needed to maintain a healthy heart?

Now, see if you are able to fill in all 6 groups of the food pyramid, as well as list the servings for each.

Conclusion

You should now be able to identify the five major food groups. You are now one step closer to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and how to balance your food everyday and the portions needed.Remember to have fats, sweets, and oils sparingly, and to eat 2-3 servings of dairy, 2-3 servings of protein, 3-5 servings of vegtables, 2-4 servings of fruit, and 6-11 servings of grains.
