Hey Kids! Do you know that math is part of our DAILY LIVES? Math is used when you cook, bake, shop, measure, and more. In this activity, you will take part in a REAL LIFE MATH activity.
Who doesn't love a good party? For this activity, you will be planning your very own Birthday Party. Who will you plan a party for? A friend? A family member? A pet? You will shop for everything from decorations to food and drinks. Get ready to add, subtract, and multiply decimals. Let's get shopping!
Task
Get ready to SHOP! Your task is to throw a surprise birthday party for someone special in your life.
Your budget for this party is $75.00. Be sure to shop wisely and compare prices at different stores, because the money you have left over will be used to buy your special person a birthday present. Remember, this activity is to have fun and practice or decimal operation skills, please do NOT actually purchase anything. Let's look at our list. Get ready to HAVE FUN!

Process
1. Review the grocery list of items (Attachment 1 has a student template that you can download and use).
15 Balloons
8 Party Hats
1 Birthday Cake (You can just buy a cake mix)
4 Bags of Chips
3 Bottles of Juice
1 Package of Invitations (minimum of 8)
1 Pinata
2 Bags of Candy for Pinata
2. You can explore the following websites to find the BEST BUY: Target, Walmart, and Party City. You should use Attachment 1 to gather all necessary information and SHOW YOUR WORK on a separate sheet of paper. You may reference atttachment 2 to view my example (remember, all of my work is shown on a separate sheet of paper). Remember, your budget is $75. You will need to "buy" the above items AND a birthday present. I know you want to get your special person a nice present, so shop wisely!
3. Make sure to fill out the worksheet COMPLETELY. Don't forget to record at WHAT STORE you found each item. Also, don't forget to find your total (including 5.5% sales tax). Remember, after you find your total, you need to determine how much money you have left over.
4. You willl use your addition skills to find your TOTAL amount spent. You will use MULTIPLICATION to determine how much it costs to buy multiples of one item and to find the sales tax. You will use subtraction to determine how much money you have left over.
5. Remember, you should "purchase" all items on your list first. Then, depending on how much money you have remaining, you can shop for the perfect gift within your price range.
6. Please hand in your student worksheet and work upon completion.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated on your participation and your completion of the worksheet. Remember, you must stay within your budget (including sales tax).
Conclusion
Wow! What a fun birthday party your planned. Thank you for putting so much time and thought into planning the perfect birthday party for your special someone. I hope you had fun reviewing your decimal operation skills through a REAL LIFE MATH ACTIVITY!
Next time you are out shopping, keep in mind the things you learned here. Remember to always compare prices and shop for the best buy. Also, it is good to give yourself a budget to avoid overspending.
