Geometry: Transformations

Introduction

How many of you love playing video games? Online games?  Have a favorite cartoon, commercial, video, or logo? Ever wonder how it all comes to life?

One career is Digital designing!

Digital designers use creativity and computer skills to design the visuals associated with these images we love so much. These graphic designers are responsible for displaying those infamous graphics on your game systems, computers, phones and TV screens.

Task

This project was designed to assess your understanding of transformations and the application of the rules required to perform these transformations through the use of technology.

Let's try our hand at digital designing.

Task:

You be will be responsible for designing, via Excel, transformations (translations, reflections and rotations) of an image of your choice.

Process

The following guidelines were created with the intention of making the process for completing your project easier! I hope. :)

Step 1: You will need to draw a pre-image of a picture that has 10 or more points, to determine the coordinates.

* If you decide to choose a pre-image you’ve seen on the internet, you may not duplicate it.  This is considered Plagiarism; this will result in an automatic zero!!!!!

Step 2:  Your pre-image should be completely inside one of the quadrants on the coordinate plane.  Please label accordingly. Place points at all of the vertices.  It does not matter which quadrant you start in.  It is your choice.

Step 3:  Open Excel,

Step 4:  List the points, ordered pairs and rules on the transformation summative activity.  All points should be listed accurately with a title of the transformation data, the rules used to perform the transformations and the quadrant in which your transformation is in.

Step 5:  Next you will accurately translate, reflect and rotate your image into each of the remaining quadrants.  You may do this in any order you want.

Step 6: Make sure you use the rubric is you have any questions.

Conceptual

Understanding

Exceeded expectations of conceptual understanding evident.

Images are labeled accurately (i.e. pre-image, and image)

Images are accurately transformed (translation, reflection and rotation)

Rules required to perform transformations are accurate.

Image incorporates 10 points (accurately identified and labeled)

The direction of the transformations is accurate and clearly shown.

Met expectations of conceptual understanding evident.

Images are labeled accurately (i.e. pre-image, and image)

Images are transformed (translation, reflection and rotation) with minor errors.

Rules required to perform transformations contain minor errors.

Image incorporates 9-8 points (accurately identified and labeled)

The direction of the transformations is noted; is not clear in 1 of the images.

Approached expectations of conceptual understanding evident

Most images are labeled accurately (i.e. pre-image, and image)

Most images are transformed (translation, reflection and rotation) correctly; major errors are/may be present.

Rules required to perform transformations contain major errors.

Image incorporates 7-6 points (accurately identified and labeled)

The direction of the transformations is noted, but is not clear in 2 of the images.

Partially met expectations of conceptual understanding evident

Few images are labeled accurately (i.e. pre-image, and image)

Few images are transformed (translation, reflection and rotation) correctly; major errors are evident.

Rules required to perform transformations contain major errors.

Image incorporates 5-4 points (accurately identified and labeled)

The direction of the transformations is noted, but is not clear in 3 of the images.

Did not yet meet expectations; little to no conceptual understanding is evident.

Images are not labeled accurately (i.e. pre-image, and image)

No images are transformed (translation, reflection and rotation) correctly; major errors are evident.

Rules required to perform transformations contain major errors.

Image incorporates <4 points (accurately identified and labeled)

The direction of the transformations is noted, but is not clear in every image.

Drawing

Presentation

Graphing in the coordinate plane is done carefully.

Work is very neat and well organized.

All lines and points are precise; All surfaces are smooth and refined.

All artwork is colorful and uniform.

Evidence exists that a ruler was used in designing the piece.

Final piece is intact; not ripped, torn or taped.

Overall appearance is excellent.

Almost all graphing in the coordinate plane is correct.

Work is very neat and well organized.

Most lines and points are precise; Most surfaces are smooth and refined.

Most of the artwork is colorful and uniform.

Evidence exists that a ruler, for the most part, was used in designing the piece.

Overall appearance is great.

Some graphing in the coordinate plane is correct.

Work is somewhat neat and well organized.

Lines and points are somewhat precise; Some surfaces are smooth and refined.

Some of the artwork is colorful and uniform.

Some evidence exists that a ruler was used in designing the piece.

Overall appearance is good.

Graphing in the coordinate plane is done with little care.

Work is not neat and is unorganized.

Lines and points are not precise; Many surfaces are not smooth and refined.

The artwork is not colorful or uniform.

Little evidence exists that a ruler was used in designing the piece.

Final presentation could be improved.

Graphing in the coordinate plane is done with little to no effort.

Work is not neat and is unorganized.

Lines and points are not precise; Many surfaces are not smooth and refined.

No evidence exists that a ruler was used in designing the piece; appears hand drawn.

Little to no care and/or planning is evident in final presentation.

Final piece was not completed, therefore, drawing presentation could not be assessed.
