Introduction
For the past few weeks, you have been reading and discussing "The Odyssey" by Homer. You have learned about classic literature, Greek mythology, and the epic form. You have also learned about the character traits that make up a hero like Odysseus. For this webquest, you will use what you have learned to complete one of two tasks to demonstrate your knowledge about epics and heroes.
You will either use your knowledge of epic form to compare and contrast "The Odyssey" with a modern epic or you will use your knowledge of the hero's journey and the resources provided along with your own creativity to create your own hero who will travel through his/her own epic.

Task
Please complete ONE of the following tasks. Details can be found under the Process tab of this webquest.
1.) Classic epic vs. Modern epic
You will think of a modern example of an epic (some examples are Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, the Hobbit; if you want to use a different example, check with Mrs. Humphries). Create a Venn Diagram using the following link to compare and contrast the two epics. Include the following elements: main character, ultimate goal, setting, conflict, resolution. Use at least 1 quote from "The Odyssey" to illustrate one of your elements.

2.) The Hero's Journey
You will use the following link to create your own hero's journey step by step. Be sure to complete each key element of the hero's journey.

Process
If you choose to complete the Venn Diagram task:
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/venn_diagrams/
1.) Be sure to enter your first and last name and project title -"Odyssey" is fine.
2.) Choose which example of a modern epic you will use for this assignment. Get approval from Mrs. Humphries if it is not on the list.
3.) To label your Venn diagram circles, double click the gray box that says "circle 1" and label this circle "Odyssey." Double click "Circle 2" and label it with your modern epic. After typing in the titles, click the check mark to save.
4.) To begin making your list, click "New Item" in the top left corner. You will make 5 tags for each circle, as well as the overlapping circles, which indicates how the two epics are similar. The 5 tags will be labeled "Hero," "Ultimate Goal", "Setting", "Conflict", and "Resolution."
5.) Begin with the overlapping area of the circles. This is where you will show what is similar about the two epics. For the "Hero" tag, list how your two heroes are the same, including character traits, physical characteristics, and backgrounds. List similarities for each of the tags listed above and put in the overlapping circle.
6.) In circle one, you will use the same 5 tags listed above, but list how Odysseus and his journey are different. Use at least one quote from your textbook to support one of the elements.
7.) In circle two, you will use the same 5 tags listed above, but list how your modern epic is different from the Odyssey.
8.) When you are done, click the "Save" tab at the top and save to your chromebook. Use this format to save: lastname.firstname.hour
9.) After saving, click "send" and send to lhumphries@sapulpaps.org, AND karywideman@sbcglobal.net

Conclusion
At the conclusion of this assignment, you should have a strong understanding of what an epic is, and how this type of literature shows us the value of classical Greek culture. You should also have a deeper understanding of mythology as you have learned about certain characters in The Odyssey. You will understand the elements that make up an epic, and identify those elements either by finding them in modern epic examples, or by writing your own hero's journey.
