Getting Better at Reading and Writing...

Introduction

Many of you have stated different areas of concern within your own writing and/or your understanding of the reading we do in class. I have concerns in these areas as well. ;)

The more serious you approach today's WebQuest, the better your understanding of the reading and the better your writing will become. However, this is only one day of practice. What you learn today you have to actively continue to practice each time you read and write. Remember: Don't practice laziness! You wouldn't go to your team's practice and only watch them, or stare at your phone and then expect to play well at the game, would you?

Task

Today you will be completing a WebQuest designed to improve your ability to figure out meanings of words using the sentence(s) around them as well as improving your overall writing abilities. For some of these activities, you will need to write down your answers in section four of your notebook, pre-writing. For others, you may just need to follow the directions and answer the questions online only.

Either way, be sure you are taking this seriously as your grade will be affected by how much you pay attention today.

Process

Follow each of the links. OPPOSITE of our test-taking strategy, start where you think you need the most  help! You need not begin with the first link, as long as you click through and complete each activity at some point. Start where you think you need the most help.

Evaluation

In your notebook on the same sheet you used for the "there," "their," and "they're" assignment, answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1. Why is being able to figure out the meaning of words without using a dictionary a necessary skill?

2. Why does it matter which "there," "their," or "they're" a person uses?

3. Why is editing with care important?

Conclusion

Thank you for participating! Put your MLA formatted heading on your piece of notebook paper and prepare to turn it in before the end of class.
