Diabetes and its challenges

Introduction

The Pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is unclear, the disease is associated with increase adipose, with a sedentary life-style ,and with biomarkers and genes.Diabetes affects: the metabolism of glucose ,insulin production, and its effective use. More than 400 million people suffer from diabetes mellitus in the world, in the United States about 29 million people battle diabetes ( CDC,2016) which is a complex disease affecting every organ  in the body. Diabetes Mellitus is a medical challenge and carries heavy financial burden, a large percentage of health expenditures is allocated to diabetes and its complications.Such problems and complications include depression ,nurses are well equipped to address issues affecting patients compliance and impeding their progress.

Task

your task will be to develop innovative ways to enhance patients learning and decisions making and to assist them in prioritizing their health needs.

Evaluation

After this process you should:

 have developed a deeper understanding of challenges faced by patients especially newly diagnosed patients.

 know that developing and analyzing patient care on an individualized basis is cardinal to patient-centered care.

have a deeper understanding of effects of psycho-social and cultural aspect on  patients values, priorities, and management of their diseases.

Understand rationales for routinely incorporating and addressing mental health in diabetic patients during encounters.

Develop innovative  technological,and strategic ways to motivate patients into  prioritizing their health needs.

Conclusion

Incidence of  type 2 diabetes mellitus is on the rise( CDC, 2016) , depression is among its numerous complications. Depression has been found to have a bidirectional effect on people suffering from diabetes mellitus, depression may also be an  impediment affecting compliance with prescribed regimen  Nurses are well equipped and positioned to routinely assess patients for mental  issues and for adaptation and  coping mechanisms in regard to  lifestyle changes .Management of chronic diseases such as diabetes type 2 requires  a team approach  with patient at the center , addressing mental issues is an integral part of patient-centered strategy.

Diabetes is a chronic and devastating disease , stigma associated to diabetes include :overeating and indulgence in sweets, this stigmatization and cultural components may negatively impact patients who are diagnosed with the disease. Negative impacts may be social isolation, depression and non-compliance with prescribed regimen, an  imbued nurse is well positioned to motivate and enhance patients decisions  in seeking resources to help manage the disease..
