Solving a System of Equations by Substutition
Introduction

You have just been challenged by your older brother to figure out how many hours he worked at each of his jobs last week. You have nothing to fear since you already know how to write and solve equations as well as use the substitution property. This WebQuest is going to build upon those skills and by the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to solve a system of equations using the substitution method.
Task

Your task:
Your older brother just received his first paycheck from each of his 2 jobs. You ask him "How much did you make?" He responds "$690". You ask "How many hours did you work at each job?" Your brother said "I worked a total of 30 hours. I make $20 per hour as a carpenter and $25 per hour as a blacksmith. If you can figure out how many hours I worked at each job, I will give you $20."
Process
Evaluation
Evaluation: Your Grade (20 points total)
The object of this WebQuest was to introduce systems of linear equations and how to solve them using the substitution method.
The WebQuest will be worth 10 points.
Points will be deducted if any parts of the notes/examples are incorrect since they can directly from the websites. (-1 point for each incorrect answer)
Points will be deducted if any of the parts are incomplete OR completed using incorrect work/steps. Answer do not have to be correct, but the work has to show understanding of the material. (-1 point for each part incomplete or completed using incorrect work/steps)
The TASK will be worth 10 points.
- Did you correctly define the variables for your problem? (1 pt)
- Did you write the two equations needed correctly? (2 pts)
- Were you able to solve one of the linear equations for x OR y? (1 pt)
- Were you able to correctly use substitution to solve for one of the answers? (2 pts)
- Were you able to substitute your first answer in to get the second answer? (2 pts)
- Were you able to correctly interpret the solution? (2 pts)
Conclusion
Now that you have completed this task, you have reinforced old skills and learned new ones. You will leave this task with the understanding and knowledge of how to solve a system of equations using substitution. Systems of equations are used everyday in real life. They are used many times without people even knowing they are using them. When you are trying to figure out how many hotdogs and hamburgers for a party and knowing you only have so much to spend, you are using a system of equations.
