Mr. Lowery's "Proportional Relationships" Webquest
flag
Introduction
What are "ratios" and "percentages" and how do I use them?
The objective of this WebQuest is to learn:
1. How ratios are related to percentages, and
2. How they are used to express situations and solve simple problems.
I will compare and contrast ratios and percentages to understand how they are similar and in what ways they are different.
My role will be a self-motivated learner. I will follow directions that include independent tasks such as watching a video and answering questions online.
I will now click on the "Task" tab.

Task
The goal of this task will be:
"I can write and apply equations that represent proportional relationships."
For example, I will be able to correctly answer the question, "12 is what percent of 24?"
Applying the concepts of ratio and percentage, my answer will be "50%."
What I know will be reinforced by watching a 6-minute video.
I will next answer questions online and record the results on a "data sheet."
I will now click on the "Process" tab.

Evaluation
I will answer ten (10) questions online by following these steps:
1. I will follow the link below and click on the "PLAY NOW" button.
2. I may use a calculator if needed.
3. I may work together with a peer.
4. When I have finished answering the ten questions, I will record the results on the "data sheet" provided.
Link to the evaluation:
After finishing the evaluation, I will click on the "Conclusion" tab.

Conclusion
Now that I have completed this task, I have reinforced old skills and learned new ones. I will leave this task with a better understanding of how ratios are related to percentages.
Percentages are used everyday in real life. When I figure out the tip for my meal at a restaurant, or the discounted price for a new pair of jeans, I am using percentages. What other ways do I use percentages?

Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
