Introduction
Each book has a voice that must be heard. Some are sweet. Some are so horrid that you do not wish to ever hear it again. It will be your task to find a book that reaches out to you and captures your attention.
Let’s Get Started, Shall We?
In this quest to find the voice of the book, students will read a book from “The List” provided by the teacher. Student will be tasked to write in their reading journals about the book and complete other assignments relating to the text and reading selection.
First Thing First…Selecting A Book
You will start off by looking at the attached list of books entitled "The List" and think about your choice. Choose wisely, because you will need to form a relationship with that book, and it would just be awful if you dislike your selection right off the bat.
Pick quickly though, your book could be chosen before you get to it!
You have three days to decide... Or do you?
"The List" is found under the credits section.
Task
Tasks
Writing E-Journal
Your writing e-journal will only be used to complete assignments
You may use a composition notebook as rough draft of each task. Reminder: Only work completed in your e-journal will be counted towards your final grade.
Task 1: To create a literary term dictionary.
Separate each section by letter, decorate the book however you would like, and fill the book with each of these terms and definitions.
*Please use website that we created in the previous weeks to create your e-journal.
Task 2: Write short reflections of what you have read each week.
Each reflection will have a minimum of two paragraphs.
The first paragraph will be your summary of what you have read that includes number of pages and chapters. The second paragraph will be your reaction to the text you have read. “Did it surprise you?” “What happened to this character?” “What did the character mean when he/she said this?” etc…
This will be needed for your final task.
Task 3: THE FINAL TASK
Write a “review” of the novel. Model your writing after a New York Times Book Review. (1 page)
Choose 3 quotes from your book selection and write a response. React/respond, DO NOT summarize! Clearly label this section in your e-journal.
Process
The Process
The process will go as follows:
- Email me three choices off of the list, and I will reply to you which book you are able to read. Choices are based on a first come, first serve basis. You have 3 days to choose a book and get started.
- Reflections will be due every Monday and Thursday, so try to follow along with them; your reflections will come in handy for your assessment of this project.
- All reflections must be submitted to your e-journal for assessment.
- There are a total of ten reflections for this project and they are each worth 10 points.
- A week after the last reflection is due; your final paper is due. This is your assessment and is worth 200 points.
Evaluation
Evaluation
Your evaluation of this project will be a final reflection paper in which you bring all of your summaries together and tell me what you think of the book. Be sure to look over the attached sheet below to see all of the components for this paper. It is worth 100 points and is due a week from the tenth reading reflection you write, which should be on a Thursday.
