CHILD ABUSE WEBQUEST

Introduction

Every year millions of reports on child abuse are made around the world. It’s a terrible epidemic that everyone is supposed to be dedicated to put to an end. To do this, we need to first increase awareness of the issue itself.

child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. There are many forms of child maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and emotional abuse.

Task

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to;

(i) define child abuse.

(ii) state the  types of child abuse.

(iii) list the causes of child abuse.

  • learners to do the above tasks in groups of five.
  • in their groups learners should come up with role play demonstrations to show their understanding on how child comes about.

Process

There are three major types of abuse These are: physical, social, emotional or psychological and sexual abuse.

Physical abuse is the physical maltreatment of a child by an adult. The following picture shows a child who has been physically abused; http://www.istockphoto.com/photo/child-abuse-gm157502084-10547456. this abuse can be manifested in form of child labor corporal punishment and injuries that are inconsistent with the deserved punishment such as burning a child s hands because she has eaten some food without permission from the adults. Phiri (2007) states that “physical abuse is characterized by injuries and bruises seen on the body of child that can be adequately explained.

social abuse is preventing a person from having contact with relatives, friends, service providers and other people or restricting the person’s activities, thereby increasing their sense of isolation.

emotional or psychological any act including confinement, isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation or any other treatment which may diminish the sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth.

Sexual abuse is one form of child abuse. It includes a wide range of actions between a child and an adult or older child. Often these involve body contact, but not always. Exposing one's genitals to children or pressuring them for sex is sexual abuse. Using a child for pornography is also sexual abuse. for instance the are videos and images that show sexual abuse around the world

The clinical psychologists should help the perpetrator by first of all understanding the causes of such actions. The psychologists should collect data in the counseling session on reasons causing the abuse. The assessment may lead to some contributing factor such as:

(a) Poverty: children are sent to do pieces of work or sell things in order to raise money for the family,

(b) Family going through a stressful change: children are sent out to work in order to earn an income for the family. For instance, illness of a breadwinner.

(c) Parents and guardians who are victims of abuse when they were young: these are likely to do the same to children as they feel it is a right way of disciplining children.

(d) Parents/guardians or teachers who are more punitive an less empathetic: they judge and punish a child on the basis of whatever story they have gathered about him or her without giving them time to tell their side of story.
