This exercise will take you on a fun-filled quest. Kryssy the archaeologist, needs your help to unlock the key which will open the cave and unlock the treasure chest. The problem is that, in order to get this key, Kryssy has to identify 3-D solid shapes by their nets or by their characteristics in order to assemble the shapes to insert them into the correct section in the wall to unlock the key. Sadly, Kryssy doesn't know which is which.

In groups of three, you can help Kryssy the archaeologist, but in order to do so, you must be able to identify each shape by knowing how many faces, edges and vertices it has, as well as how their nets look before they are assembled. This may get a little confusing at times, but think really hard so you can be of great help to Kryssy...

Task

Create a presentation that will help Kryssy to understand the description and characteristics of each solid shape needed for the mission along with a picture of the outline of the nets.

Be sure to help Kryssy the archaeologist, name and identify all of the solids.  Have FUN!!!!

Process

In groups of three students will identify and present with the aid of PowerPoint slides and physical

manipulatives the following figures: cylinder, rectangular prism, sphere, cone, cuboid and cube. For

each of the figures students should:

  1. Write a description of the object and the matching geometric figure along with its net, answering the following questions:
  2. What are the characteristics of this geometric figure?
  3. What are some real-world objects that represents these shapes?
  4. What are the cross-sections of these shapes?

Deportment

Movements seem fluid and helps the audience visualize concepts while displaying relaxed, confidence with little or no mistakes.

Fair amount of movements or gestures that enhances articulation. Makes minor mistakes, but quickly recovers and displays little or no tension.
