Introduction
True Story
The film is based on a true story. Benjamin Mee is a writer for the Guardian newspaper and was living in France with his wife and two small children, when his family circumstances called for him to move back to the UK and go in search of a house big enough for his family and his mother. The family ended up buying Dartmoor Zoological Park, (Devon, England) which was in need of some tender loving care and a lot of money spending on it. After moving to the zoo, Benjamin’s wife Katherine died of a brain tumor leaving him to look after the couple’s two small children, Milo and Ella and also take care of the zoo.
Benjamin decided to write a book about his experience and that book was turned into the film.
With no experience, limited time, and a shoestring budget, Benjamin sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen a zoo.
Task
You bought a zoo! Congratulations on your latest investment, however the codes are not up to par and you and your co-owners _________________________________________________________________
need to submit a blueprint on the revisions of your entire zoo in order for the transactions to be completed. You and your staff have to prove to the strict zoo Inspector Chan that you know how to care, look after the animals, and maintain the zoo.
You and your co-owners have $2,000,000 total to spend. It’s time to put your geometry and problem solving skills to the ultimate test. You get to choose your animals and create the layout of their enclosures in your zoo.
In this packet you will find a list of animal species to choose from and how much they cost. You will also find how much space each animal needs to live comfortably. For this project, 1 square on the grid paper represents 625 square feet. This means a square is 25ft by 25ft. Remember, you are looking at your zoo from an aerial view.
You must complete the purchase order before drawing any layouts of enclosures. You may not spend more than the $2,000,000 limit. Each square foot on your design will cost $5.
Example: 1 square on your grid paper is 625 square feet so 625 x $5 means that one square on your grid paper costs $3125.
Process
- You must purchase enough animals to have 8 enclosures on your property. 3 of the 8 exhibits have to be in closed enclosure (so you need to calculate the volume and include materials for the entire exhibit) You may have more than 8 animals because some animals need to live with a family.
- You must have at least 1 restroom and 1 concession stand. Restrooms and concession stands are 625 square feet each.
- You must complete the purchase order before drawing any layouts on grid paper to make sure you do not go over the $2,000,000 limit.
- Each building must be drawn to scale on grid paper provided in class.
- Each building layout will have the name of the animal, volume/area, and surface area/perimeter written inside the shape.
