Introduction
Hello and Welcome to the World of Gemology!
Today in this activity, you and your classmates will learn about the geological process that creates Gemstones and how to identify some basic Gems.
If you do not know what a Gemstone is, the Webster dictionary defines a Gemstone as: a mineral or petrified material that when cut and polished can be used in jewelry. Examples: Diamond, Opal, Sapphire, etc.

Go to the next section to learn more about your activity today, and HAVE FUN!
Task
1. Each student will be assigned to a group. After your teacher assigns your group, a team leader will be chosen amongst the group.
2. Now that you have your group, the group leader will be given an assignment where he/she will have to work together with their teammates in order to correctly match gemstones. The group leader will then write the answers down on a piece of paper. RESEARCH IS ESSENTIAL!!
3. After the assignment, each group will be assigned a gemstone to look up information on, your job is to primarily be able to identify the gemstone and have an understanding on how they are formed. You will watch a video that will instruct you on how it is formed. TAKE NOTES!!
4. Once everything is completed you and your group will create a presentation on how your gemstone is formed. BE PREPARED YOU WILL PRESENT TO THE WHOLE CLASS. You will be given 5 minutes to present so make it clear and simple. You can add as many pictures as you'd like.

Let's start your research on Gemstones! Once your groups are formed and your group leaders are chosen, gather research needed for identifying Gemstones!

Next, each group will be assigned a specific Gemstone by your teacher!
While watching this video on how Gemstones are formed, pay close attention to your specific Gemstone that was assigned to your group.
EVERYONE WRITE NOTES ON HOW YOUR GEMSTONE IS FORMED!
Then, after the video is done, compare notes and get a group rough draft of how your Gemstone is formed.
Once your group has all your information written on your rough draft, you will create a presentation on how your Gemstone is formed and present it to the class! Your teacher should have a poster board and markers ready for each group.
Also, once presentations are done, your class will be making rock candy, just like the example used in the video! :D
