Comparing and contrasting (animals)

Introduction

This WebQuest contains multiple activities where students will learn vocabulary related to animals and compare some of their  characteristics. During the lesson, students will compare two or more animals using comparatives and superlative adjectives. At the same time, they will write complete and grammatically correct and sentences using comparatives and superlatives. The final product for this WebQuest is the creation of a personal animal card to compare their favorite animals. 

Task

Students will create their own animal cards to compare their favorite animals. 

1. Recognize vocabulary related to animals. 

2. Read some examples with images of animals comparing them. 

3. Learn about the rules to form comparative and superlative adjectives. 

4. Create the comparative and superlative of some adjectives.

5. True or false activity on white boards. 

6. Write 5 comparatives and superlatives sentences from the animals in the pictures. 

8. Select two favorite animals and create at least 4 sentences comparing and contrasting them.

1. Look at the images of animals and talk to other students about what they know of these animals.

2. Then, with a partner read some examples of comparative and superlative sentences about three animals (dog, horse and elephant). Also, use the following graphic organizer to complete information of these animals.

3. Watch the video with the rules for comparative and superlative adjectives (one syllable, two or more syllable words and irregular forms).

4. Using the annex #1 write some comparatives and superlatives of the animals presented in the images. Look at the images and think, How are these animals alike? What do you see different? You can watch the following videos of the animals to learn more about them.

5 With a partner and using the white boards, read each of the sentences presented on slide #4 and decide if the comparative sentences are true or false. Compare with answers with a classmate. 

 

6. Find two more students (3 students per group) and using the following short paragraphs, try to decide what animal is more than the other (based on the adjective). Then read the information. Check with your group if your answer was the correct at the beginning. 

 

7. Using the slide # 5, create 5 comparative and superlative sentences. Look at the characteristics of each animal. You can take some time to search on internet for information of each animal. You can also ask any of your friends. 

 

8. Select two of your favorite animals. Using slide.com paste two images of the animals you have selected. Then, type 10 sentences (5 comparative- 5 superlatives). Finally, create a short video in Flipgrid to share with your friends.

Evaluation

The final product for our comparative and superlative lesson is a Flipgrid video where you will use at least 5 comparative and 5 superlative sentences using any of the adjectives from the process and worksheets presented. Your video will be evaluated based on the following criteria.

  • all the sentences (10) were created correctly and show an understanding of comparative and superlative. 
  • The sentences were completed.
  • 80 percent of the adjectives were used correctly.

Conclusion

To conclude with this lesson, you will watch 3 of the videos created by your classmates. You will share your ideas about the animals they selected and if you agree with the comparison they have made. If you have any questions, you can ask and clarify using video or text comment. Finally, you can also use the following worksheet to compare and contrast any of the animals. (this worksheet can be used as a variation of the activity)

This activity has been designed for low-intermediate English language learners using comparatives and superlatives with a topic on their interest (animals). At the same time, students will talk, read and write information related to animals. Before this lesson, students have read sentences that contain comparative and superlative sentences. They have studied basic vocabulary about animals and some of their characteristics. Their age range from 11 to 14 years old. 

As an extension activity, teacher can provide a virtual gallery walk where students observe images and compare them using a slide share doc.
