Introduction
Hello boys and girls welcome to Plant Land!
Now I know we all love plants, but how much do we really know about them. Today you will be little scientists/explorers and learn about the parts of the plant while having fun in your discoveries.
Plants come in many different shapes, sizes and colours. However, most have a similar basic structure. There are four (4) main parts of a plant; the root, stem, flower and leaves. All of these parts have very important roles in making the plant we love so much survive.
Grade:4
Subject: Science
Key vocabulary: plant, flower, leaves, stem, root, nutrients
Author: Anna-Kay McKenzie
Before you get to your task let's sing The Plant Song and learn about the important parts!
Task
Plant Land Task!
In learning about the parts of a plant and their functions, there are a few task you will need to complete.
Your tasks are listed below.
1. Draw and label the four parts of your favourite plant.
2. Find out the functions of each part of the plant and write them below your drawing.
3. Pairing with another little scientist, compare the plant you both drew and try to figure out the names of each others plant.
4. Use discarded materials to make a plant of your very own.
5. Create a garden of your favourite plants.
Process
Welcome my little scientist!

I know you are very excited to get started. Read through the process carefully following each step to complete your task.
Have fun!
1. Click the link to learn about the four main parts of a plant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2r5LLy9Qaw. In your drawing books you will now draw your favourite plant and label the four main parts. Use colours to brighten up your plant.
2.Watch the video 'The Parts of a Plant' below. Listen carefully in order to learn about the functions of the different parts.
3. In your drawing book beneath your favourite plant, write the parts of the flower with their functions.
4. Select a little scientist you want to work with. Share your drawing with this person and try to figure out each others plant. You may write the name of the plant after this.
Click on the name of the plant below to learn more.
5. Now that you have learnt about other plants you will make one of your own. You will need to gather some discarded materials. These maybe newspapers, bottles, plastics, anything you can find. You will now create one of the plant you learnt about through the links. Your creativity will be needed to complete this task.
Click the link for ideas to make your flower. Remember you will have to present your plant to the class and share something interesting you have learnt about that plant.

Evaluation

Well done my little scientist! You have almost completed your quest.
Complete the sentences below using the words given.
ROOTS STEM LEAVES FLOWER
1. The ___________ of a flower produce seeds which form new plants.
2. The ___________ make the food for the plant. They take the water and mineral salts together and use them together with sunlight and carbon-dioxide to make food. This is called Photosynthesis.
3. The ____________ is like a straw. It moves water around the plant. It raises the leaves and flowers of the plant off the ground.
4. The ____________ take in water and minerals from the soil. They anchor the plant into the ground.

Teacher's Notes
Roots -> Take in water and food (mineral salts) from soil. Anchors plants. The roots of a plant are spread out. Stem -> "Like a straw", transports water through plant. Raises the height of flowers and leaves. Brings closer to light. Structural. The stem is made up of little tubes. Leaves -> Different shapes. Almost always green but sometimes covered with another colour such as red. Green substance in leaves -> chlorophyll. Leaves make food for the plant. To do this they need the water and mineral salts obtained from the soil. They are carried inside little veins in the leaf. To make food leaves also need sunshine and CO2. Flowers - > Flowers produce seeds which form new plants. Space and warmth also needed for a plant to grow. |
Hi my fellow colleagues! I know as teachers we are always seeking new ways and ideas to deliver effective and meaningful information to our students.
Here are links to a few web pages with information that can assist us in delivering a lesson on Parts of a Plant effectively; as well as how to become a more effective teacher.
