Introduction

In this webquest, you will participate in different activities so that you can learn how to use persuasive techniques to express opinions and convince your audience. Some of the work will be done in pairs or small groups groups. You will watch videos and view images that companies use to persuade their audiences. Together with your classmates, you will learn ways that you can be very convincing. At the end of the lesson, you will work with a partner or a small group to prepare a presentation.

Process

  • Here is what you need to do...

First, explore the document "Persuasive Topics", read over the options you have and choose a topic.

Next, read the document "The Hook/Catchy Start" and the "Transitional words and phrases" document to get an idea on how to create a hook and the transitional word/phrases options.

Then, complete the 4-square graphic organizer.

Last, begin writing your persuasive essay.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated on four sections, they are, legibility, writing strategies, writing applications, and written oral language conventions. Each section is worth 4 points each. This will give you a total score of 16.

Here is what you need to do to score 16 points:

  • Include the hook and transitional word/phrases in your essay.

  • Include all the elements from the graphic organizer in the essay.

  • Persuade the reader to support your idea(s).

  • Stay on topic.

  • Support your position statement.

  • Predict opposing reasons.
  • Support your position with counterarguments.
  • Have a call to action.

  • State a clear position or perspective in support of a proposition or proposal

  • Describe the points in support of the proposition, employing well articulated evidence.

  • Anticipate and address reader concerns and counterarguments.

Conclusion



Congratulations on completing your first persuasive essay. As we progress through our persuasive unit, it is important to remember what is needed in each essay. Throughout the year, you will be expected to create persuasive essays in response to novels, short stories, and non-fictional text. This essay will be the first of many. The more you write, the better you will become. Once your essays are evaluated, you will be able to review them, make corrections, and submit them for reassessment.
