Ready or Not, Here Comes High School

Introduction

Times are changing and as eighth graders in a few short months you will be graduating middle school to enter the high school world. Things are going to become very different, peer pressure and temptation will become something you need to conquer everyday during high school. You will need to figure out whether 'yes' or 'no' will be the right answer to many of the obstacles that come your way. Now it's time to test out your knowledge and learn more about drugs and alcohol.

Task

Objectives:

  • Learn more about alcohol and drugs
  • Learn when to say 'no' to peer pressure
  • Provide the students quality information that will be needed in high school
  • Perpare them for High School obstacles

PURPOSE AND GOALS:

Two games will be played during this sections, 'RUN! True or false' which will be played outside and bingo which will be used to test knowledge. 'RUN! True and False' will be used to test knowledge before the lesson actually begins. On the other hands, bingo will be used to test what they have learned.

Process

Step One: RUN! True or False game. As a class we will walk out to one of the sports field to play this game. There will be a green flag on one side of the field and a red flag on the other side of the field while all kids stand in the middle. A teacher or myself will be holding a handful of alcohol and drug flashcards that have true or false questions on them. If you believe the answer is true, run to the green flag. If you believe that answer is false, run to the red flag. This game will allow me to see what you already know and to see what we need to cover more while during this section. So, bring your best running shoes and get ready to run!

Step Two: PowerPoint. The next class will be used to go over information that needs to be reviewed and needs to be learned. This is where you will listen to quick and small lectures, watch informational videos, and ask any questions that you have. Do not hesitate to ask questions!

Step Three: Bingo. There will be vocabulary words and 'yes' and 'no' placed in various spots on a bingo board. Students will each have their own bingo board and bingo chips to play the game. I will read the same flashcards that were used for the RUN! True or False game. You will place a chip on the spot in which they believe is the answer. The first person to get bingo will receive a prize. There will be two winners for every game and at the end of the game anyone who did not win, will be given a few questions to answer. If you answer correctly, you will also receive a prize.  Don't forget to use your classmates for extra help!
