Process
Task A:
Health Fad: | Details: |
Cigarette Diet | Women were not always allowed to smoke cigarettes and could even be arrested if they were caught smoking in public. This all changed in the 1920's and women began to seek civil rights. One American tabacco company came up with a clever marketing idea to encourage women to smoke and advertised smoking as an appetite suppressant. One of the ads was worded “For a Slender Figure—Reach for a Lucky Instead of a Sweet” |
Atkins Diet | The Atkins Diet was founded by Robert Atkins. In 1963 he was over weight and decided to try a diet based on some research by a doctor who recommended removing starch and sugar from meals. He researched further and found that it was also recommended to increase fat and protein. As he was a doctor he was able to trial this diet with patients. This proved a success and he went on to write a book in 1972. |
Lemon Detox Diet | The Lemon Detox Diet was orignally called Master Cleanse and was created in 1940. This diet allowed the drinking of filtered water with fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup while fasting food. The point was to cleanse the body of all toxins and to lose weight. In the modern version of Master Cleanse which is called the Lemon Detox Diet a natural tree syrup called Madal Bal is used. |
Bikram Yoga | Bikram Yoga began in the early 1970's. It was founded by Bikram Choudhury who practriced Yoga since the age of 4 and was the Indian National Champion at the age of 13. Bikram Yoga consists of 26 different yoga positions and 2 breathing excercises. It is said to have many health benefits including benefits may include weight loss, greater strength, better flexibility, improved posture, mental clarity, and an improved ability to concentrate. |
Biggest Loser Challenge |
The Biggest Loser Challenge is a result of the popular TV show 'The Biggest Loser' which started in the 2000's. It is an online weight loss system where members have access to meal and excercise plans for a fee. |
Task B:
1. Promotion of health fad:
Cigarette Diet:
'Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet' was a printed advertisement which appeared in many fashion magazines to promote weight loss to women from smoking the Lucky brand of cigarettes.
Lemon Detox Diet:
The Lemon Detox diet was marketed by printed advertisements in magaznes, infomercials and radio ads.
Bikram Yoga:
Bikram Yoga is a franchise and it seems that each owner does marketing for it's own centre. There is also a Bikram Yoga website and it is advertised through social media such as Facebook.
2. Pictures of advertisements for Lucky Strike Cigarettes:
3. Successful Marketing of Fads:
Cigarette Diet:
At the time the cigarette diet was marketed I believe it would have been successful as it showed women looking glamorous and also at that time women were challenging the system for civil rights. Lemon Detox Diet:I think that the use of celebrity names such as Madonna and Beyonce to market the Lemon Detox Diet would have helped make it successful as many people look up to these celebrities and try and be like them. Bikram Yoga:I believe that the marketing for Bikram Yoga is successful mainly because many people have already heard of it and it is a heath fad that is quite fashionable at the moment.
4. Unsuccessful Marketing of Fads:
Cigarette Diet:
I think the marketing for the cigarette diet would be unsuccessful if this was marketed now as people have a much greater awareness of the harm cigarettes cause.
Lemon Detox Diet:The actual product would make it hard to successfully market the Lemon Detox Diet as it is based on drinking a lemon drink and not eating anything which is hard for people to commit to and not a healthy way to lose weight. Bikram Yoga:From the advertisements Bikram Yoga looks as if it would be hard to do unless you are already fit and flexible so the marketing appears to be targeted at younger people who are slim and fit already so it may be unsuccessful for all other groups in the population.
5. The fad I would pick and why:
The fad I am most likely to pick Bikram Yoga as I am interested in trying this.
6. The fads I would be least likely to try and why?
The fad I am least likely to try the cigarette diet as smoking is bad for you and affects your lungs.
7. Negative Side Effects:
Cigarette Diet:
Smoking harms many organs in your body including your
lungs and also can cause diseases such as lung cancer.
Lemon Detox Diet:
The side effects of the Lemon Detox Diet are that you are
likely to feel hungry, dizzy and moody. If you are not eating
enough energy foods your body may begin to shut down some
functions.
Bikram Yoga:
There is not very much written about the negative side effects
of Bikram Yoga but it is done in a very hot room and there
have been reports of pain, numbness in the limbs and
dizziness.
Task C:
Death from Health Fads:
Health Fad: | Breatharianism Diet |
Person: |
Verity Linn, 49, was an Australian born lady living in Scotland when she died whilst attempting a 21 day fast.
|
Duration of Health Fad: | The breatarian diet was first introduced in 1980 by Wiley Brooks, the founder of the Breatharian Institute of America. |
Reason for going on Health Fad: | Verity's diary was found after her death which revealed that she went on this diet as she believed her body would be spiritually cleansed and she would be recharged both physically and mentally. |
Symptoms: | There are no reported symptoms in relation to Verity but a study on this diet reported that symptoms include dehydration, dilated pupils, slow speech and an increased pulse. |
Did the Health Fad achieve what it claimed in any way? |
There is no proof of success from this diet. |
Details of other similar cases: | There have been a number of deaths due to this diet. These include Timo Degen, a preschool teacher from Munich and Lani Marcia Roslyn Morris a 53 year old from Melbourne. |
Task D:
Unsafe Fads
Dr Phil's show on unsafe fads revealed some interesting information. The first fad he looked at was the use of tanning machines. Two ladies, Erin and Ashley, admitted they were addicted to tanning as they believed that they must be tanned in order to be atractive. Two specialists on the show talked to them about the dangers of this practice. They advised that in order to protect themselves from the sun's harmful rays they need to wear sunscreen which is at least SPF 15 and protects against ultrviolet A and B. If the skin is not protected it will lead to premature aging, wrinkles and more importantly skin cancer. Even after the ladies were shown pictures of women who had cancerous spots removed from their face and nose leaving gaping holes that took complex surgery to fix one of them still admitted that she would not stop tanning.
The second fad looked at the diet pill Phentermine. This is an appetite suppressant which is prescribed by health care professionals. Stephanie, a guest on the show, told of her success whilst using the drug. She was prescribed the drug for 9 months and lost a total of 80lbs. She explained that she felt more energetic and was happy with her weight loss. However, she began to experience side effects and stopped taking the drug. Whilst taking the drug she experience nausea headaches, a racing heart, feeling dizzy and as if she would pass out. Her husband told her that he felt she was moody. As she wanted to lose another 10lbs she asked the shows guest doctor if it would be safe to go back on the drug again. His answer was no as the drug is only supposed to be taken for a maximum of 3 months so Stephanie had already exceeded the time limit. The drug is an amphetamine which are highly addictive. It was originally on the market in the 1960's but no clinical trials have been conducted so there is still not much information available about the long term effects. It can also cause depression and insomnia. Stephanie decided not to take the drug again. In 2011 actor, Bubba Smith, died of an overdose of Phentermine.
Task E:
Conclusion
In conclusion it would appear that the majority of fad diets, rather than being healthy, actually impact your health in a negative way.
Most companies use successful marketing strategies such as using celebrities to advertise their products to get people to try them. They also promise things that they cannot always deliver to make them look more attractive to people.
A better health strategy would be to eat a balanced diet every day and exercise which is something that can be maintained rather than a fad which can only be done for a small period of time.
