Introduction
The Outsiders takes place in America during the 1960s. While this may conjure up images of bell bottoms and long hair to many people, the Sixties was a complicated time of change in the country. There were many different subcultures happening at that time, not just hippies! During this webquest, you will learn more about the culture of the 1960s in order to understand the context of The Outsiders.

Conclusion
This is a small slice of life in 1960s America. It was a time of many changes, some painful and beautiful. When you are reading The Outsiders, remember what life was like at this time - no internet, a Cold War with Russia, heavily divided social classes, the civil rights movement, and a feeling of discontent among the teenagers at that time. S.E. Hinton was a teenager writing about what she witnessed and experienced, and this makes The Outsiders a personal and classic piece of literature.
