Imperialism is also known as Neo-Colonialism (New Colonialism)
Imperialism became a global trend even though it was started in Europe after the Industrial Revolution
Imperialism = the policy in which stronger nations extend their economic, political, and/or military control over weaker territories
Economic = take raw materials, sell goods to new markets of consumers (why buy when you can take?)Political = removing, controlling, and/or puppeting the politcal power of a different nation (neo-colonials) Military = better weapons due to Industrialization led to industrialized nations taking over other nations by force (biggest navy became important)Philosophy = Having colonies = empire = more powerPhilosophy = EMPIRE = civilized = better than other nationsPhilosophy = Having a bigger military = more colonies = more money to pay for military = more wars

Examples of Wars Caused by Imperialism
*As each empire tried to expand their territorial claims, conflict soon arose. With the Industrial Revolution and the rise of militarism, these empires were willing to wage war to expand.
Example #1: Franco-Prussian War of 1871
Europe was the first place to erupt. France and Germany (Prussia) were in a heated competition not only in Africa, but in Europe. France was embarrassingly defeated by Geramny (Prussia) in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871. This allowed Prussia unites with other Germanic territories to form Germany and continue to grow stronger and stronger. Soon Germany had the greatest land army in the world while France wanted revenge for their embarassing defeat. This part of why France tired to challenge Germany in World War I and World War II although both were even more embarassing defeats than the previous war.
