Super Cities!

Introduction

Intrepid Explorers! It’s time for an expedition…

You are tasked with bringing a foreign city to life! Using Google Earth, you will choose a foreign city in a far away land and take us on a Virtual Tour.

Task

By the end of this lesson sequence, you will design and virtually construct a new ‘Global Super City’. You will show your their ability to use Information Communication Technology [ICT] to enhance your learning by utilizing Google Earth to first produce a tour of a foreign city, and then to collaboratively produce a tour of a new Global Super City.

Sounds good, right?

Your Learning Intention is this:

"Students will demonstrate an ability to engage with and master an unfamiliar piece of software. Students will use their creative and critical thinking skills to apply their newly-acquired knowledge to a new scenario. Students will justify their design choices using Geographical knowledge and reasoning."

Process

  1. A Virtual Tour of a Foreign City
  • First, keep your notes from our Virtual Tour of our town handy. This will give you an idea of what to include in your own Virtual Tour.
  • Next, using the Planning Proforma given to you, answer these questions: what city would you like to investigate and why? What do you think you will find? Do you or I have contacts in that location that you could email/Skype with? This must be signed off by me before you continue.
  • Commence your research! The following websites should have most, if not all, the information you need:

http://www.ngkids.com.au/

http://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/

https://www.lonelyplanet.com/best-in-travel

  • Now, put your information together in the form of a speech that you can give as you walk us through your city! Explore with Google Earth as you go - make your mistakes now, so that you show us your best work in your presentation.
  • If you're confident, give the "Record a Tour" function a go!
  • Be ready to present to the class - show us the incredible city you've discovered!

     2. Building your own Global Super City

  • Collaborate with your classmates - make groups of 3.
  • Now, using the notes you took throughout our presentations, pick some of your favourite attractions. You will use these to build a new Global Super City!
  • Collect the information you need, and be ready to answer the question "Why?" Why have you chosen these attractions? Why would they be great additions to a new Global Super City?
  • Using Google Earth, take us on another tour, this time across the globe to all the new locations!
  • Remember the "Record a Tour" function!! This will help with achieving the Success Criteria.
  • Again, get ready to present to the class!
  • You will complete self and group assessments once all of our presentations are completed.
