Teaching Special Needs students! 1st Grade

Introduction

As the new school year rolls around, I am getting excited to teach my class. It will be so exciting teaching 1st graders. I cant wait to get to know them and there cultural backgrounds and get to there families as well. Lets get this school year started.

Task

As I am going through my list of students, I realize I have about 5 special needs students and I need to research methods to teach them to the best of my ability. So I have my work cut out for me, well not really. I will be thinking of different activities I can do to teach them, I want them to learn as much as they can as well as my other students.

Process

I have found some websites to help me with teaching special needs children. They are listed below...

www.FunBrain.com  / www.Do2Learn.com  / www.Academicskillbuilders.com / www.ReadingRockets.com

Learning Disabled Students demonstrate discrepancy, between academic achievement, and intellectual abilities, listening comprehension, written expression, basic reading skills, spelling, mathematic spelling and more.

*Provide oral instruction for students with reading disabilities

*Make activities short and sweet and to the point

*Repeat instructions or info in both written and verbal formats

*Praise them when needed

Evaluation

I am going to list some problems that learning disabled students have:

*Has week or poor self esteem

*Has bad auditory memory, short and long term

*Easily Confused

*Verbally Demanding

*Difficult to stay on task for long periods of time

*Has problems working in groups with others students or large settings

*Has poor handwriting skills

*Easily Distracted

*Difficulty following instructions from teachers

*Often cant control emotions

Conclusion

I have researched and provided tons of websites and examples on how to teach a special needs students. I hope this helps anyone that teaches different students. Remember treat all your students the same and let them know you are there for them. Even If you have to go the extra mile to give them more learning then you do it, they need lots of 1 on 1 time.
