Transgender and Third Gender Explanation

Introduction

Gender identity and biological sex are two related yet differing variables in research of a "third gender". Where biological sex is the assigned "male" or "female" at birth, gender identity is the later feeling masculine or feminine and can sometimes lead to what is known as gender dysphoria. A genetic female has two "X" chromosomes, while a genetic male has both an "X" and a "Y" chromosome. There are instances when a person can be born "XXY" or "XYY" which means that the sex chromosomes are redundant, they can also be missing. This has all had to do with sex, but there is also the concept of gender. According to Chaz Bono, a transgender FtM, "Gender is between your ears and not your legs." Many think that these third genders are made-up or not real, but in fact, strong dysphoria can occur when there is a disconnection between a persons biological sex and gender identity. Transsexuality, by definition, "is a strong and persistent cross-gender identification and a persistent discomfort with (one's) biological sex". I mentioned transsexuality and its definition because you are going to be reading an article and answering questions based on this third gender and the science and psychology behind it. Transgender people do not quite identify with a third gender, but there are trans people who undergo surgery, and people who are not trans, and still identify with a gender outside of the binary.
