Trees Tell All

Introduction

Trees! Trees! Trees! They surround us and help with all of our everyday activities. Without trees we wouldn't even be alive right now, sometimes it can be hard to understand just how much trees impact our lives. Today we will go through several activities to learn how important trees are and how much they impact us. We will also learn new terms and tools to use when it comes to trees. In addition you will need to follow the process I have created to reach your final goal.

Your final goal is to be able to understand a Web Quest. For the final in this class you will be preparing one and they will be randomly handed out to other students to complete.

Task

Work through all of the activities in your Web Quest. By completing all of the activities you will be able to understand some of the common uses for trees and how they impact our lives.

Task 1: Follow the links and identify at least 10 uncommon or common uses for trees, things that you may not have thought of before doing this project. (cite each link they came from, at least 1 from each site)

a) https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/7-products-you-didn-t-know-come-from-trees

b) http://www.idahoforests.org/wood_you.htm

c) https://www.treepeople.org/resources/tree-benefits

d) http://www.savatree.com/whytrees.html

e) http://allaboutwatersheds.org/library/kyw-poster-files-and-links/riparian-zone

Identifications should go as follows;

  1. Use for this tree:
  2. Which link you followed / found it on:
  3. Why this is a good use:

Task 2: Identify the following terms.

1) Alternate                                            6) Cambium

2) Opposite                                            7) Understory

3) Riparian Buffer Zone                         8) Canopy

4) Hardwoods                                        9)Whorled

5) Softwoods                                        10) MADHORSE

Task 3: Now that your definitions are completed, get with a partner and make sure you both have the same definitions, if you do not identify why you used that definition and reason out which one is correct.

Task 4: With that partner take paper, tape, and a pencil ( a clipboard would be useful) to the designated area. When there you will need to choose 10 different trees and take a leaf off of each. For each you will need to answer the following questions.

!!Make sure you label which question you are answering!!

Question 1: What is the name of the tree it came from? (Scientific and Common)

Question 2: Opposite or Alternate?

Question 3: Hardwood or softwood?

Question 4: Does the tree fit into the MADHORSE category?

Question 5: Can this type of tree be used in a Riparian Buffer zone?

Question 6:  What are 2 common uses for this type of wood?

Task 5: When you are finished with the following you will need to complete at least a  two page paper detailing what your life would be like if we had no trees (and we could somehow breathe). In this paper make sure you identify the pros and cons and how some of the trees we researched are used in our everyday lives.

Process

Phone a friend! Coming up with all of your own uses may be hard, feel free to ask a neighbor for help. Make sure you use the resources you have.

Now you need to take out a sheet of paper and start planning your Web Quest for your final project in this class. You will be asked to present your ideas to the class before you go into the final stages of the Web Quest.

Remember to have fun! Good luck!!
