The Fall of a Sports Empire

Introduction

For your final writing exposition you and two classmates are going to start your own newspaper company. Your first job will be for you to cover the lastest story about your favorite sports team selling their franchise.

Students will work in groups of three, you will have a reporter, a editor, and a jounarlist to cover this story. You must find out why the owner is selling the business, who are the front runners to buy the business, how much revenue was being brought in, and lastly how do the citizens feel about the unfortunate turn of events.

One thing I require you to do is have a lot of fun with this assignment and also use your imagination! The more creative thoughts that you have that are out of the box the better! Finally, each student is required to contribute equally in the group.

Task

There are 3 tasks for the members to choose from and a brief description of what each task does.

Task 1: The journalist is the person that goes out to redeem all of the imformation that support the topic. They are the ones who does the dirty work for the newspaper company.

Task 2: The editor is the person that takes the information that the journalist gather and make it appropriate for the press. They recieve the information raw and breaks it down into smaller segments for the media usage. This allows them to make sure they are giving just the right amount of information!

Task 3: Then you have the reporter this is the person that goes in front of the camera and explain to the people what is going on in the world. Appearance is everything so if you choose to be the reporter you have to come dressed for the part and willing to elaborate the information to the people.

Remember girls and guys that the best newspaper companies go above and beyond to get the information they need when covering a story. Look at the other groups as rivals and your competing against them! I want you guys to have a TON of fun when doing this activity! Make sure to work as a team for the better of your group!

Process

Step 1:

Groups

Students will be assigned to groups of three by the color card they recieve from Mr. Hughes. Then your group will decide on which sports team you will be writing about in your article. Once the team is chosen groups will decide on who will be the reporter, the journalist, and the editor.

Step 2:

The rise of the Empire

Students will begin research on the team of their choosing. Students will find out who owns the team, how long they have been the owner, and simply some additional brackground information on the owner they feel students should know!

Step 3:

In the field of Reasearch

Students will use everyone and everything for their use of research. For the finding of revenue and information of the owner students will be able to use any internet resources (Except any Wiki sites). I want students to use family members, staff members, friends anyone they know and choose label that person as the new owner and as the citizens of the community. I want them to have the full experience of working in the media and the best way to accomplish this is by allowing them the ability to interact with the people of the community and not just sitting behind a computer!

Step 4:

Printing the Press

Students will put all of the information they gathered together and have it printed in the same format as a newspaper. Their paper must have a have their company name (and logo if you want to create one)  and their article must have a title. A copy of the paper must be printed for each group. If you need Mr. Hughes to print your paper you must email it to him in a timely fashion!

Step 5:

Feeding the People

After the paper is printed and passed out to the people the reporter in each group must go in the front of the class and elaberate on the information they have found. Although the information is present within the newspaper the media still puts the news on television for those who doesn't read the paper. So, as a reporter your job is to make sure everyone is aware of the changes and make sure you express how your group feels about the changes that are being made.

As part of our seventh grade reading unit, our class has been reviewing the ability media has on the world. Media is a outlet that keeps the people aware of what is going on in the world. Sometimes things are true and accurate and some things are stretched to make them more interesting.

This WebQuest is designed to be an extension activity where the students get to create their own version of the media to present to the people. They will research a sports team of the choice. Then they will need to process that information to figure out why their business is being sold and the things that come with running a business. The response they get fro their peers will give them a audience to see the effect they will have if they were the actual media.
