Introduction
Brochures are used worldwide to educatue someone on a certain topic quickly. Reading is certainly one of the best ways to learn, but sometimes we do not have enough time to read a book. Brochures are used to be an attention getter. Brochures give a quick overview to get reader's interested so that they want to know more. For example: gas stations might have brochures that include maps of the local area, lists the places that are around town and gives brief descriptions along with pictures. The idea is to educate the reader and get them more interested.

Our 6th grade class has been selected to make brochures that highlight each state. Once I assign you a state you have to become an expert on that particular state. You will present your brochure to the class so that we can also become experts on your state. The local travel agency will come collect all brochures to feature them in their next issue. However, the best brochure will recieve a prize.

Task
You will choose a partner, groups of two only. Each group will be assigned a different state. Together you and your partner will create a brochure about the state I have assigned you. You will have 5 days to complete your brochure. Two computer days to research your state, two days to put your brochure together and on the last day you will present your brochure to the class. Remember, you do not have to have lots of words for a brochure to be good. Include pictures, different colors, and basic information. Inform the reader about the state, include facts that are exculsive to your state only. I want to know what makes your state unique.

Process
1. After you have chosen your partner, come to my desk as I will assign your group a state. Each of you grab a computer on your way back to your seats.
2. It would be helpful to write down what you already know about the state you have been given. You should make an outline of your brochure. Deciede what kind of information you want to include page by page. Google sample brochures so you can see exactly how much detail is put into them.
3. Research your state. Gather as much information as you can about your state. Write it down. Sometimes you cannot find the same webpage you were previously on. I have attached a list at the bottom of this page of websites you may find helpful. Between what you already know about your state and your research you should have enough information for a good brochure.
4. Start putting your brochure together. You will create your brochures using Microsoft Word. There is a brochure template in Word that you will use. Do NOT use a blank template. Refer to the sample brochures for correct placement. You might find that you have too much information, if that is the case deciede what is more important to include. Brief descriptions in your brochure should not be longer any longer than a paragraph. Use at least 5 pictures and lots of color. Remember brochures are attention getters!! You should have completed as least 3 full pages of your brochure by the 3rd class day.
5. Turn in your brochures for me to grade. At the end of class on the 4th day your brochures will be due. I will grade them and give them back to you the next day so your group can present. Presentations will just be graded on participation. However, you will write down one thing you liked best about each group's brochure during their presentation. As a class, we will discuss what made each brochure unique.
6. While all brochures will be featured in the travel agencies next issue, only one brochure will recieve a prize for being the best. As a class we will vote for our favorite brochure. You can not vote for yourself.
