Adolescents and Mental Illness

Introduction

1 in 5 teenagers suffer from a mental health disorder. This is a staggering statistic, considering nearly one third of them show signs of depression. Mental health disorders can harm relationships, disrupt school academic performance at school, and lead to suicide. Mental health disorders can be mistaken as regular anger or irritably.  Social withdrawal, major changes in appetite and sleep are also signs of a mental health disorder.  Mental health is still carries a stigma with it, so families may not seek help for a teenager suffering with a mental health disorder.

If a teen gets help for the mental health disorder after the symptoms appear, the impact on the teen will be less.

Learning about mental health disorders is important because so many people do not understand them. Understanding mental health disorders will make them less scary. As a teen you will be better prepared to help another teen who suffers from one.  This web quest is designed to help you become better acquainted with mental health disorders.

Task

You will navigate through three web pages. These web pages will teach you about teen depression, bipolar disorder, and social phobia (social anxiety disorder).

While reading the information on each web site, write notes pertaining to 1) signs and symptoms, 2) methods of treatment, 3) who to contact when there is a crisis.

Process

You are expected to read each information on each web page. There information on each web page is presented clearly, easy to read, and short in length.

Keep in mind, while reading the information, you will be writing an expository essay on "Teens and Mental Health Disorders."

  1. Read the information.
  2. Take notes on important information:
  • signs and symptoms
  • methods of treatment
  • who to contact when there is a crsis
  • Copy the bibliographical information from the web pages
  • Evaluation

    Write a 250 word expository essay titled "Teens and Mental Health Disorders." 

    The expository essay will consist of an introductory paragraph, which will include an attention getter, thesis, and reasons. The body paragraphs will consist of a topic sentence (reasons) and details that support the reasons (topic sentences). The last paragraph is the conclusion; it needs to consist of a rewritten thesis, the three reasons, and a final thought.

    • Write a thesis for the essay.
    • Write three supporting ideas or reasons for the thesis
    • Include important details, examples or illustrations that strengthen the essay's content
    • Write a conclusion that wraps up the essay

     

    Type the essay on a word document.

    Use 12 pt, Times New Roman or Arial Font.

    Include an MLA References page

    Turn in the completed paper.

    Conclusion

    After completing this web quest, you should have learned about three teen mental health disorders. Hopefully, you are more aware of mental health and are more able to understand those who have them. Understanding mental health disorders as a patient, family member, and friend makes it easier for the person who has the mental health disorder.
