Teachers will have students perform a combination of strength, conditioning, and stretching exercises during the 55 minute class. Specifically, you will require them to perform a timed mile run (conditioning), pullup/pushup/sit-up challenge (strength), and a full body stretch routine. Upon the completion of these exercises students will communicate/collaborate with their classmates through online conferencing. Have students use the web tool 2.0 website https://www.yugma.com/ to communicate/collaborate with one another about their experience. This can help students compare their knowledge with one another while finding strategies to reach their full potential for the future. I believe the above lesson will help contribute to answering the essential question in "What are the benefits of incorporating physical education into a school's curriculum." It is my hope that students have a productive strength, conditioning, and stretching session. In addition I hope students are able to properly reflect during the online conferencing session where they can talk about their experience with the class, how they think they benefited from the class, and what they need to do in the future to improve. I think this form of collaboration will work well because everyone in physical education class has a wide range of physical abilities. This in addition to there being three different exercise stations (strength, conditioning, stretching) will cause people to have varying degrees with each portion of the lesson. I believe this will help stir up interesting conversations where students can learn from one another based on the strengths an weakness of individuals in distinct exercise stations.
Learners:
The learners of the lesson will be middle school students ranging from grade 6-8. There will be 20 students in the class with 12 male and 8 female students. It will be a small physical education class based in Lowell, Massachusetts. There will be no necessary prior knowledge required for the class but because we will be doing strength, conditioning, and stretching exercises most students will be pretty familiar with the material before hand. If not they will easily pick up on how to perform these movements. Specifically students will perform a timed mile run (conditioning), pullup/pushup/sit-up challenge (strength), and a full body stretch routine.
Curriculum and NETS standards:
Standard: Motor Skills and Movement Patterns-Demonstrate competency in basic and advanced motor skills and tactics in three or more of the following categories: aquatics, dance, fitness activities, individual/dual sports, outdoor pursuits, leisure pursuits self-defense, team sports and cooperative games/activities-Perform motor skills and movement patterns necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities
Standard: Cognitive Concepts-Apply an understanding of motor skills, movement patterns and strategies as they relate to the learning and performance of physical activities-Execute procedures, rules and etiquette as they relate to the learning and performance of physical activities-Utilize content knowledge to achieve and maintain physical fitness-Understand the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities
Standard: Active Lifestyle-Participate daily in physical activities in both school and non-school settings in order to achieve and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle-Understand factors that impact participation in physical activity-Select and participate in physical activities that provide enjoyment and challenge-Regularly assess personal physical activity level
Standard: Personal and Social Behavior-Accept diversity in a variety of physical activity settings (i.e., ability level, cultural background, gender, interest, age)-Participate in physical activities with people of different genders, ages, backgrounds, interests and abilities-Exhibit positive personal and social behaviors (i.e., best effort, responsibility, compassion, initiative, cooperation)
Standard: Affective Concept-Exhibit a positive attitude toward physical activity and its contribution to a healthy, active lifestyle-Value the importance of participating in physical activity
Process:
Students will perform a combination of strength, conditioning, and stretching exercises during class. During the strength portion of the lesson students will participate in a max repletion test of pull-ups/pushups/sit-ups. During the conditioning portion of the lesson students will participate in a timed mile run. Students are expected to give THEIR best effort during the run and try and achieve their fastest time. During the stretching portion of the lesson students will perform a full body stretch routine. This will consist of the quad stretch, hamstring stretch, lower back stretch, shoulder stretch, hip stretch, and groin stretch. Students will use stretching bands to produce max effort.
Upon the completion of these exercises students will communicate/collaborate with their classmates through online conferencing. Students will use the web tool 2.0 website https://www.yugma.com/ to communicate/collaborate with one another about their experience. This can help students compare their knowledge with one another while finding strategies to reach their full potential for the future. This software will be provided on the school laboratory devices and it is expected that allstudents use the lab during a designated physical education class to complete this portion of the assignment.
Resources needed:
There will be a variety of different materials used through the lesson. During the physical part of the class (conditioning, strength, stretching) an indoor track will be used for the running portion, small padded mats will be used for the pushup/sit up, pullup bars will be used for the repetition test, and bands will be used for the stretching portion. For the reflection part of the lesson students will use a computer of their choice contained in the lab where they can properly access the YUGMA website.
In addition both websites listed below will be available for additional information for students if needed:
Evaluation:
Students will not be evaluated on their performance during the lesson. This means I will not give letter grades to individuals or groups based on their results. Instead I will be evaluating students on completion of the assignment and expect full participation and effort from students. I will mainly be looking at two main things from the students. One is for students to finish all the requirements during the lesson. This means full completion of the timed mile run (conditioning), pullup/pushup/sit-up contest (strength), full stretch routine, and YUGMA write up of collaboration/communication amongst classmates. The second thing is for students to give forth their best effort during the lesson. Although each student will perform at different levels itis my goal as teacher for each student to give THEIR personal best on each portion of the assignment.
In addition students will be further evaluated in class sessions during the future. I will hold more strength, conditioning, and stretching contest through the semester. It is my hope that students will improve each test by gaining more experience with the timed mile run (conditioning), pullup/pushup/sit-up contest (strength), full stretch routine, and YUGMA collaboration/communication conference.
Conclusion:
Students will learn a few important things during the lesson. First they will learn how to participate in strength, conditioning, and stretching exercises. This means during strength portion of the lesson students learn to test in pull-up/pushup/sit-up contest. During the conditioning portion of the lesson students will learn to test in a timed mile run. During the stretching portion of the lesson students will learn how to quad stretch, hamstring stretch, lower back stretch, shoulder stretch, hip stretch, and groin stretch. In addition, students will learn how to access the YUGMA website and how to collaborate/communicate with one another through online conferencing. Finally, students will learn where they stand in all the above areas and how they can improve in performance for the future.
