Cells

Introduction

 Topic: Science

7th grade science, mild to moderate special education class

Lesson Objective: Learners will demonstrate understanding of the function of plant cells

California Content Standard:

Cell Biology

1. All living organisms are composed of cells, from just one to many trillions, whose details usually are visible only through a microscope. As a basis for understanding the concept:

  1.  Students know cell functions similarly in all living organism
  2.  Students know the characteristics that distinguish plant cells from animal cells, including chloroplast and cell walls

Technology Standard: NETS for Students:

  1. Research and information fluency
    1. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

  • Questions for Research
    • Essential Question
    • Additional Questions (5-10 questions)
  • Assessment  (List on your lesson plan, but you do not need to include an assessment on your blog/wiki/website).
Task

Students are to complete the follwing three websites.

Task #1 complete the plant cell interactive learner

Task #2 go to link #2 and do the cell quiz, you may use notes and textbooks if necessary

Task #3 enjoy a nice game of cells and make sure the parts of the cells do not "kill" you.

2. http://www.biomanbio.com/Quizzes/CellQuizzes/cellquiz1.html

3. http://www.biomanbio.com/GamesandLabs/Cellgames/CellExplorerAnimalCell.html

Process

After doing all three web interactives, please answer the essential question and the ones that follow in your google docs and share with me.

Essential question:  Students will be able to analyze the elements of an animal cell and plant cell, then compare and contrast them both?

Subsidiary Questions:

  1. What is a plant cell?
  2. What is an animal cell?
  3. Are the similar and why?
  4. Are they different and why?
  5. What do plant cells do?
  6. What do animal cells do?
Evaluation

Students will be graded on:

  1. How hard they work/how much they completed for this lesson
  2. Their accuracy
  3. How much effort they put into the online interactive websites
Conclusion

The students had three different online sites to visit. One is a quiz which I will be using as part of their assessment. The other two interactive websites, the students will work on them and get familiar with the assignments. One is a game and I will assess that by observation, making sure the students are playing it correctly and if they are getting the answers correct. Each time they finish a game, the students have to email me their score. The other interactive website does not let the student continue until the parts are in the correct area. Since this is a mild to moderate special education class, the students will be able to use their textbook.  I will assess this assignment by observation and once the students finish they are to print out their report at the end, then turn it in for a grade.
