Chemical Change Webquest

Introduction

Have you ever wondered what happens when a fireworks explodes, what happens when you digest food or even something as simple as dissolving salt in water? Well, if you have, this is the site for you! Even if you haven't, I think you will still find this interesting.

Task

For this experiment we will first need a few materials.

  • A Regular Sized Party Balloon
  • Vinegar
  • A Plastic Bottle
  • Baking Soda
  • Funnel (Optional But Recommended)
  • Ice (Optional)
  • Water Optional (Optional)
  • Red Cabbage (Optional)

ALWAYS remember to have adult supervision when conducting any experiment!

We will be doing an experiment to demonstrate the chemical reaction that occurs when baking soda and vinegar are mixed. We will also look at what is produced by the vinegar and baking soda and why.

Evaluation

Well now that were done with that experiment, what did we learn? Well, you might not have known / noticed this one but actually the vinegar and baking soda fizzing up and inflating the balloon was a chemical reaction. The vinegar was an acid and when combined with baking soda which was alkaline it formed CO2, or carbon dioxide. This is the gas that inflated the balloon when it tried to escape the bottle.

Conclusion

This experiment is very good for demonstrating acids, chemical reactions, bases and is very fun and interactive overall.
