Introduction
What struggles did Anne Frank and her family go through? Cite from text where it shows their struggles. After finding concrete evidence from the book, make your own assumptions about what happened.
Task
Get into groups of 3 or 4 and find instances where there was struggle or conflict in the book. Have your group write down on a piece of paper at least 3 examples from the text. After finding factual evidence discuss among your group members some ideas that the you might think the author is trying to convey.
Process
Give the fifteen minutes in their groups to talk and collaborate. After fifteen minutes switch gears to talk and collaborate about some ideas they think the author is trying to convey. Give them 5 minutes to do this. When both parts are finished, read some of the answers out loud by calling on students who want to volunteer.
Evaluation
To make sure everyone understands that we are looking up information from the text to find our answers, I am going to do a ticket out the door. I want each student to individually find a quote from the book that meant something to them. I will give each student the last ten minutes of class to do this. I want each student to write at least one sentence from the book with a page number.
Conclusion
After the lesson plan is finished and we wrap it up with a ticket out the door, I am going to send the students home with a fun worksheet. I will count it as 2 extra credit points if they bring it back tomorrow.
