DISEASE

Introduction

This WebQuest is designed for you to discover knowledge of diseases relelvant to your school. In Primary School, Measles, Influenza, Diabetes, Hepatits A and B and Heart Disease are all important to know about, but do you know enough? in this WebQuest you will discover basic information that you will need to add too in order to inform someone who does not know about these diseases. Good luck!

Task

Your task is to use the information we will discuss together with your own research to learn about ONE of the mentioned diseases in detail. You will then use this knowledge together with a partner to create an informative video for a person who is unaware of this disease and needs to know preventative strategies. You must use your own research to find answers different to what was provided to you in lessons one two and three.

Process

Here are some important points to consider about Hepatits A, Influenza, Measles and Diabetes:

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that is commonly transmitted when an uninfected (and unvaccinated) person ingests food or water that is contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. In this case, it is not fatal but symptoms can be challenging to deal with. Safe hygiene practices need to be exercised to reduce the risks.

Influenza is a viral infection that spreads easily that can be limited through a vaccination. It affects everyone due to it being easily spread through sneezing, coughing, poor hygiene and breathing on someone.

Measles is the leading cause of death among children, even though there is a vaccination available. It is highly contagious with obvious symptoms that unfortunately can lead to blindness. It can be spread in a similar way to influenza however has no antiviral treatment options.

Diabetes is a disease that affects the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin. There are two types: type 1 the body does not produce enough insulin for correct functioning and 2: the body does not use insulin properly. They both share similar symptoms and are treated differently. Unfortunately type 2 diabetes can cause severe damage to the heart, blood vessels, nerves eyes and kidneys if not properly cared for.

Rubella is a viral infection that occurs in children and young adults that can be treated with a vaccine. It has an obvious rash when exposed to the virus that lasts 1-3 days. It is closely related to measles and is treated with the same vaccine.

All these diseases are important to know about in order to prevent, especiall diabetes and heart disease, but also to ensure the spread of the diseases is not excessive. This is where i need your help, as mentioned you are to make a video. In this video you need to consider the information above and find further, relevant information regarding symptoms, vaccinations and preventative strategies for your younger sibling. you might also like to consider, for the benefit of your school friends, how long you must stay at home for to ensure you do not pass it on to your friends.
