Do you Dewey?

Introduction

Today you are going on a Webquest. A Webquest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web.

Here is your mission:

You are in the GCCS Library and your ELA teacher has demanded that you pick out a new non-fiction book. After all, you've only read "Diary of a Wimpy Kids: Dog Days" 20 or so times. Why can't you just read it a 21st time? Teachers can be so picky sometimes.

You are frozen in fear. You know where the fiction books are. You've been at GCCS long enough to know where the picture books are. But non-fiction? It's like another planet. Fortunately, Mrs. Unger has given you the tools you need to find a good non-fiction book. If you could just remember what she talked about in October.....

Task

Your job is to locate an interesting non-fiction book. However, your teacher doesn't want you to just pick something up off the shelf. She wants you to have a background on Melville Dewey, the creator of this library organizing system, and she wants the book to be something that really interests you.

1. You are going to learn about the man who invented the Dewey Decimal System.

2. You are going to find out what each of the 10 categories are.

3. You are going to be certain that you can tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.

4. Finally, you are going to identify a great non-fiction book using Destiny Quest.

Process

First, you need to have your Research Guide. Mrs. Unger has given one to you. There are 3 double-sided pages. You should have this next to you as you work on the computer along with something to write with.
