Exploring Nazi Propaganda

Introduction

Imagine this...You have awoken to read that you are no longer allowed to shop in the stores you have gone to for years. You are also banned from public gatherings and the ability to socialize with many friends that you have grown to love. It gets worse when you are forced to abide by a curfew. Sound horrible? Well this was the feeling stricken over millions of Jewish people during the Nazi Regime over Germany. Could this really ever happen? Your mission is to research the way the media is used to sway the public opinion. Compare and contrast the media in Nazi Germany to the current media in present day United States. It is your goal to ensure that the media can never again change the lives of an entire population of people.

Task

In order to complete your task, you will need to work in a group of four or five people. Each group member will be in charge of researching a certain section that will be a part of a group Google Slides presentation. This will allow for each person to research their topic in depth. The work will be split up as follows:

#1:  HITLER'S RISE TO POWER:  Research the early life of Adolf Hitler.  What started his hatred towards other races and his obsession with power? How was he able to rise to power so quickly?

#2: NAZI PROPAGANDA: Research the various ways in which the Nazis used the media to sway an entire public opinion into believing that the Jewish race was evil. Were the tactics subtle or were they blunt? Who was in charge of overseeing the media?

#3: EXAMPLES OF PROPAGANDA: Discuss the media outlets that were used..Movies, radio, public speeches, posters??? Provide actual examples of some of the propaganda used. It may be beneficial to display these images in a powerpoint presentation. Also, provide examples that show the effect that the propaganda had on the Jewish population.

#4: THE AFTERMATH: It may be safe to say that if there was not the use of the media during the Nazi reign, the destruction of the Holocaust may not have been as tremendous. Discuss the aftermath for the media post Nazi Germany. What precautions are being taken so that there will not be another media takeover?

#5: COULD THIS HAPPEN AGAIN?: Is it possible that the media could have enough power to wipe out an entire population in present day United States? Is there a bias in the media that would lead people to feel one way or another? How much of an influece does the media have over the average American? Remember: You are only as strong as your weakest link! You must work together in order to complete your task successfuly.

Process

Obviously, you want to complete your goal successfully:

STEP 1: If I have not already, I will be providing you with a role. Take your role and own it! Understand that you have an important and vital (vocabulary word) role to ensure your group's success.

STEP 2: Once you have been assigned your role, you now have to do your respective parts. Use the resources I have provided to assist you with your research. You have the option of finding your own sources as long as they are cited.

STEP 3: Feel free to ask both your teacher and group members questions that you may have about the material. Remember that some of us have more experience with this topic than others.

STEP 4: Record all your findings in a journal or word document. This has been provided for you in Google Classroom.

STEP 5: After being in both home and expert groups, collaborate with the rest of your home group.

STEP 6: Combine all sections into one complete Google Slides presentation. Your presentation must include all the roles, a title page and works cited page.

STEP 7: You will share your presentation with your teacher and the rest of the class.

Evaluation

The following rubric will be used to assess your performance. As we often do, you will be completing a reflection on the group and individual performance.
