Exploring the Periodic Table

Introduction

This webquest will help to reinforce ideas you are learning throughout the year in Physical Science. It will mostly cover topics around the Periodic Table. By working through this webquest and learning center you will be able to explore topics more in depth about the creation of the periodic table and unqiue information about each element.

Task

Your task is to work through this learning center independently when you have extra time in class. You may use either of the student desktop computers or your personal device.

Process

Use the following website to explore properties, orbitals, compounds and isotopes by looking at various elements on the periodic table.

http://www.ptable.com/

Depending on the time of the year here are the topics we will cover:

November - Properties and Orbitals

December - Isotopes

January - Properties and Orbitals

February - Compounds

Use this periodic table to uncover details about an elements history and uses. Choose 1 element from each family, including the Transition Metals, Lanthanide Series and Actinide Series to research.

This is a photographic periodic table which provides images and uses of the elements. Choose one metal, one non-metal, and one metalloid to create a one slide power point picture examples of the element and three (3) uses.

Here you can trace the history of the periodic table from AD1 to the present. You can also click on each scientist and see which elements they contributed to the periodic table. Choose 2 scientist to research. Write a fictional story about how the world would be different if the element(s) they discovered were still underdiscovered and how that would affect the world today.

Evaluation

Turn in each piece of your learning center through your Google Classroom account.

Conclusion

I hope this learning center has greatly enriched your understanding and appreciation of the modern Periodic Table.
